Saw that DEF. so sad, but hopefully they rebuild and they can put up another cam. We know they can rebuild fast. Thankfully juveniles were fledged

The latest from the National Zoo! :15heartbeat:

"Keep your paws crossed! This morning, Zoo veterinarians saw some exciting movement during giant panda Mei Xiang’s ultrasound. Her fetus was kicking and swimming in the amniotic fluid. Its spine and blood flow were also clearly visible. We hope to have a healthy cub in the coming days! Follow along on social media using the hashtag #PandaStory."

:15heartbeat: One of the California fires is approaching the Redwood Grove Condor Nest and can be seen out the opening of the nest and heard. Iniko is in the nest cavity of the redwood and has been sleeping or preening, but woke recently and seems to be aware something is very different. Not due to fledge till October I think, but not sure. Iniko approached the opening some to look, then there was heavy wing flapping and the cam switched to highlights. It has been freezing and going to highlights off and on, but the cam usually comes back, so unsure if this is more of the same or if site chose to switch to highlights due to approaching fire and Iniko's reaction or if cam cable was burned. The DVR is still working. Parent or parents left earlier today, unsure of what time. Chicks have survived in the nests in these circumstances. They are hoping the fire moves low and slow as it goes past the nest. I'm thinking Iniko had his back to the opening when he started flapping, but will have to go back to review. Hoping Iniko remains in the nest and stays safe. Link to site: https://explore.org/livecams/condors/ca ... wood-grove

:15heartbeat: Just saw their update on above situation. Here's an excerpt:

Iniko Update 1108 pm, 8/20/2020
Hi Viewers,
Unfortunately, we lost our signal to the nest cam as the fire was bearing down tonight. Most likely due to the nest cam cable melting on the ground near the base of the redwood tree. We knew it would be vulnerable to the flames and suspected it might burn as the fire crawled down the hill.
We will hike up to the nest to confirm if Iniko is ok in the coming days, once it's deemed safe by fire personnel. The nest canyon will likely have flare ups, so we need to be extra cautious before heading in.

I just hate this! I have a friend in Folsom CA who has her car packed with room for her two dogs and kitty, just in case. A friend in Lafayette will take them all in, but we hope that is not necessary. My brother in Arizona said rain has been scarcer than their normal dry weather. Praying for rain! :15heartbeat:

From National Zoo FB page:

"Joyous news: a precious giant panda cub has arrived! Mei Xiang gave birth at 6:35 p.m. and is caring for her newborn attentively. Keepers are watching Mei Xiang’s behavior and hope to see her nurse the cub and cradle it close to keep him/her warm. They’re also listening for loud squeals, which are signs of a healthy cub.'

:15heartbeat: It will be quite some time before anyone will be able to check on Iniko to see if this young, still in the nest, California Condor survived the fire from Thursday evening. Unfortunately, d/t Iniko's nest being on the north end of the fire, today's update from "Dolan Fire Update" places this nest in danger again. Excerpts from report:

"Winds are predicted to shift from predominantly north northwest to south southeast. This change in wind direction will shift the area of highest fire activity from the south end to the north end of the Dolan Fire."

"Among natural resources threatened are the Ventana Wilderness and coastal watershed and habitat for threatened and endangered species, including the California condor."
