THIS IS THE OPINION OF OUR REHABBER BASED ON EXPERIENCE:
The chick’s crop looks quite swollen which would appear that it had eaten on top of a large pellet that it has yet to expel. We see this a lot in kestrels. They glutten themselves, then end up with too large of a pellet, then they eat on top of it to compete with siblings. It’s all a part of growing up. The liquid you see it not the chick’s blood, but bloody meat juices mixed with digestive acids. The probable reason for its lack of appetite later was it’s still full.
Thanks Reenie...this does sound logical, but I didn't personally witness what you guys saw earlier today. Let's hope the rehabber is correct and that everything is ok..I always worry about some of these bigger bites that these babies take...ya just never know what is in some of them..
The only thing I have to add (since I haven't really had time to follow this nest like I would like to) is a similar situation that happened at Columbus yesterday. One of the kids, we call Curly, took a bite that was not only too large but full of feathers. He/she hacked, coughed, held its neck extended, beak to the sky forever. the baby tried to pull it out with no luck. Whatever it was would go down, then up, then down. Crop was full prior to this. Feed continued, but Curly didn't eat. Curly just stood there in a stupor..which is unusual..this is the Ms Piggy of the 3. After the feed was over and the other 2 were zonked, Curly continued to hack, gulp, and walk around...I guess eventually it went down because the hacking stopped (BTW, nothing came out that I could see). Curly only took a few bites during the next feed..but after that and today...back to normal.
I don't want to minimize what all of you witnessed but to share that Curly scared the you know what outta me yesterday during all of this. Letl's hope this baby is ok!!
