Power plant falcon rescued after crane collision
One of the three young peregrine falcons that recently fledged from high up a Mill Creek power plant smokestack collided with a crane and broke some bones on Friday.

But quick action and veterinary care has likely saved the bird, Raptor Rehabilitation of Kentucky said.

For several years, LG&E and KU Energy has had a webcam in the nesting box, allowing the public to witness the nesting season from an Internet connection. On May 8, webcam viewers got to watch as a state fish and wildlife official put bands on the three chicks' falcons, including this one.

The bird was rescued this morning and treated at Sheldon Veterinary Care by Dr. Robin Shelden, who volunteers with the Raptor Rehab, said the rescue group's leader, Eileen Wicker.

"This is a small little guy and he's so pretty," Wicker said, adding he could be back in the air within a month.

She said the bird flew into a crane at the plant, where LG&E and KU Energy has been upgrading pollution controls.

The bird broke metacarpal bones, she said.

"The metacarpals are like the finger bones," she added. "The breaks are lined up straight and although it did break the skin, we got him really quickly and laser therapy (was) very helpful with the bruising and the swelling."

The center takes in as many as 300 birds a year, releasing more than 60 percent back into the wild. They get hit by cars, fly into windows and get caught in fences, among other accidents.

The juvenile birds had learning to fly, said Natasha Collins, utility spokeswoman.

"Plant personnel noticed one of the juvenile falcons ... flew into a piece of equipment," she said. "They called Raptor Rehab. We are glad the falcon is in good hands and Raptor Rehab is optimistic about the recovery."

Are you referring to Blue Girl at Harrisburg Shepherd? I know she did not make it.

Yes gigi, sorry I was unclear. That was really sad.
A hazard for all birdies.
Decades ago we had a large window birds sometimes flew into.
I'd go out and pick them up and hold them til they came to and
looked at me, chirped thanks - and flew off
