I have an event to get ready for in Lansing for tomorrow a.m. (10a - noon) at Impression 5, our kids museum here in Lansing. show a slide show of our nest, our involvement here at BWL, and have kids write down/suggest names for our babies this year.

UPDATE 11:00 a.m. – The three peregrine falcon chicks have been checked over by veterinarians and have been named. One male is named Optimus; another male is named Falcore and the one female is named Sora.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – This is a big day for three peregrine falcon chicks that were hatched atop the BWL Eckert Power Station last month.

The trio will be banded and named by veterinarians from the Michigan DNR, MSU and Potter Park Zoo. They’ll also be weighed, checked over for any parasites and have some blood drawn.

That’s the serious part of the process. The fun part is naming the three eyases (that’s what a peregrine chick is formally called). Suggestions for names came from children who visited the Impression 5 Science Center during the recent Be A Tourist In Your Own Town event.

The peregrine parents are named Eckert (male) and Viper (female). Last year the pair produced three eggs but none hatched. Viper is 3-years-old and originally came from Windsor, Ontario. Eckert is 8-years-old and comes from a power plant in Muskegon. The two birds were banded and that is how their age and birthplace are known.

After the chicks are banded and checked out today they will be returned to the hatching box. It’s expected that they chicks will leave the nest in late June or early July.
