From SLCP Facebook:
On Sunday, March 29, we received a call from the Joseph Smith Memorial Building security staff regarding a peregrine down and acting strangely on the temple grounds. Bob Walters (our resident raptor expert and DWR's watchable wildlife coordinator) captured the bird and took her to a nearby rehabilitator. We think this adult female may be one of the JSMB nesting falcon pair.

Though she doesn't appear to be suffering traumatic injury, she is exhibiting a possible bacterial or fungal respiratory ailment. She's also depressed and not eating. She is receiving supportive therapy and we're going to run some blood tests that will help diagnose her.

We are uncertain what this means for the falcon's nesting season. It's not too late for the male (who has been seen hanging around the box recently) to re-mate. We'll keep you posted when we have information. We are still expecting the cameras to turn on Monday, April 6.

:girlsad3: The female will not be able to return for nesting season. Here is a link for Fox 13 news report with Bob and Liz:

Hope she is able to pull through this!

Thanks for the link to the report, swinwk...

I gotta stay positive...for the female to recover and the male to attract a new mate!!! If he is unable to do that, then that means 2 of my 4 favorite nests are out for the season..(I know..its all about me..hee hee..)

Once that cam goes live...we gotta be vigilant to see if the male brings in somebody new..Like Atlanta, they aren't over run with falcons so dad's gotta go searching..

Hi Everyone, So sad that we are possibly losing this female as a active part of the nest in SLC. She's been around for a long while. Here is a link to another news segment Bob did yesterday. This male was not the best help last year. He seemed rather young/clueless. I hope he can find a mate still this year but I have my doubts.

Thanks Lizzy! I sure hope she makes it! Went back and looked to see date of 1st egg appearing. In 2014 it was on 4/8 and 2013 on 4/12. So this week probably would have seen 1st egg here. You know, I always thought this Dad was quite the looker ... very dashing! I hope female falcons think so too!!! :egg17: :5val:

Swinwk, I wonder how long a male waits for a female to return?

Man, too bad all around.

bu t never underestimate a male lurijg in a female.

I guess hte important thing will be to have a male and a female here. Even if you do not know who male is.

Our Chase was useless first year bu t now look at him. some times first nesting is tough .

fingers crossed.

Thanks Liz...I actually read your update on FB and your Blog first. I am so glad they now know what is wrong with Mom...aspergillosis, from what I understand, is tough to treat, but so happy she is showing some improvement...I think I mentioned that possibility in response to one of your FB posts..

I learned about it several years ago when one of the birds in a nest we watch (can't remember which one) was diagnosed with it...and several years ago, there was an outbreak of a mutated strain of it in Seattle...don't remember the specifics, but I do remember exchanging emails with a biologist..

Liz, hopefully they also have her on antifungals...not just antibiotics...

Oh boy...another male...I sure hope its not the SLC male...Didn't Bob think there was another pair in SLC several years ago...

Once the cam goes live, we can help keep watch!!

I may have just listened to Bob wrong. It's likely he said antifungal. It's hard to hear him sometimes, plus I don't know diddly about any of this.

As far as another pair, there are pairs out by the airport, probably in the mountains, but I don't know of any right downtown. There is a rock canyon just north of the city and Bob said he had reports of a pair nesting up there years back.

Thanks Liz!! I knew nothing about this fungus until several years ago when it hit a Seattle nest really, really hard...I'm sure the vets know exactly what needs to be done...

So sad about the male that died..I'm glad Bob persisted about seeing it...let's just hope its not the SLC male...I think we have enough pics that, if need be, we can do comparisons when the time comes...of course, its never easy trying to ID an unbanded bird!!!...I'm terrible at it..
