Warbler, that is great news! So she has relocated to a new nest nearby? And what about Felix?

Barb, the bodies of 2 adult falcons were found early in the season near the nestbox. It was feared that it was the resident pair, Felix & Aisha. As far as I know, they believe the dead tiercel is Felix. Now the biologist believes that the current resident female is still Aisha! :loveshow:

Here's some more about the lack of the famous 'donut'. It seems that the nest wasn't cleaned and this may have an influence. More importantly however, it's the male who starts the nest and then the female lays the eggs there. As time passes and the birds turn round and rotate the eggs, the famous donut is formed. So, we should blame Rex, not Aisha if there's no donut this year! Image

I remember that story. Its unusual that the male was lost, and the other female I would assume was in a battle with Aisha. Well, it sure is nice to know at least one of them is here to carry on the legacy.

Sorry obxbarb, but I think we can be sure that there wasn't another female in terms of a battle. The bodies of the two falcons found dead were analysed and they both died of illness - Trichomonas and Serratospiculus. Identification was, however, difficult because of the condition of the corpses found but it was assumed that they were Aisha and Felix because of where they were found (near the tall building where they nested). A forum member who lives close to the fair reported seeing and hearing two peregrines all winter and we all assumed it was a new pair but there was no definite identification, also because of the difficulties with the cams this year. Paolo, our biologist in Bologna, was only able to identify the female as Aisha when he went to reset the cams and saw her at very close quarters. He had already been able to have a good look at the male and he had confirmed that it is a new male.
