This is probably the very moment egg #1 was laid!

It seems almost certain that this is a completely new pair and they've been named Diana and Rex. Since she laid the first egg, Diana has done little more than continue to stare at it, as if she is amazed by it. It may be possible that they are first time parents and this is her very first egg!

If all goes according to plan, there should be a second egg today...

Rex&Diana are now the resident pair in Bologna (Fiera District) and we wish all the best.
Just we also would like to remember Felix&Aisha as the great wonderful pair we followed for many years. If you like, Felix&Aisha as : you and me together - the best years of our life.

That brought tears in my eyes.. cause love is love.

Very touching and beautiful slideshow, Kim--thanks for posting it! One of the pair looked to be quite young (Felix, I think). It still had the juvie coloring...

Yes, CW, he was, good eyes! There has been another male before Felix.

Here the words of the song, if you like.

The best years of our life.

I think that everyday
Is like a marvellous peach
And how lovely to stay floating
On a soft pink cloud
Me like a gentleman
And you ….
Like a bride
While outside
Only the dust rises
There’s a storm in the air
It’ll be because we two
Are from a distant planet
But from here the world seems only
A secret hatchway
Everyone wants everything
Only to realise ...
That it’s nothing
We won’t do like others
These are and always will be
The best years of our life
The best years of our life
Hold me tight
So no night is endless
The best years of our life
Hold me tight
So no night is endless
The best years of our life
I think it’s wonderful
To stay hugged and silent
in the dark
Like boxers after the fight
Like the last survivors
Perhaps one day we’ll discover
That we’re never lost
And all that sadness
Was never really there
The best years of our life
The best years of our life
Hold me tight
So no night is endless
The best years of our life
Hold me tight
So no night is endless
The best years of our life

Kim, thank you so much for that wonderful slideshow...what a gorgeous pair...so tragic to have both of them gone...I just can't imagine...I'd like to think they are still together...and beautiful words...

Yes, it's probably only a human feeling, but I like to imagine they are still together soaring high in another sky forever..

We think Diana is stopping at 3 eggs. They look a young new pair, possibly at their first nesting experience.

Yes, Giac, our expert, says that a new young pair normally only have 3 eggs at their first nesting experience. :thumbegg:

Kim, what a wonderful tribute to great falcons. And how romantic that they should leave together, wherever they are now.

Today, Paolo Taranto, the biologist who supervises the nest, went to reset the cams and set up a microphone for live connections and took this picture of the female. He's fairly sure that it's our beloved Aisha because of various features and the voice, although a distinguishing spot under the chin has disappeared:

Paolo has added, "I can't swear 100% (because of the spot that's disappeared) but it's Aisha's voice, her feet, the colours, the marking, the moustache and the pattern of the nape so I'm personally inclined to think it's her, also because the mark can disappear with the moult, it's just a plumage feature so it isn't set with age. As far as the donut is concerned, (Warbler: I raised a doubt about the lack of the 'donut' nest) it's true, it's not the usual nest, this year the eggs are much further back, close to the window, probably due to the colder winter. Her behaviour also seems to confirm that it's Aisha - when I opened the window she neither screamed nor fled immediately but got up very calmly, as though she was used to this, and left. Then, she returned to the nest immediately after less than a minute."

Personally, that settles it for me as Paolo has known her for many years :loveshow:
