I think that we can say the third egg won't hatch. An egg was laid almost 2 weeks before the other two; incubation started with the deposition of the other two. However, it's important that the two chicks that hatched are healthy and grow into fine young birds.

Has anyone else noticed how, this year, there is one egg that is either discarded or doesn't hatch in almost every nest? I know that it's normal for this to happen, but in almost every nest followed, at least in Italy, the same year?

I have noticed!!!...not to mention the early death of chicks. James River has lost 2 and Richmond has lost 3 and then the 3 lost in Italy. It also seems we have more first time parents this year. We still have a lot of nests here that haven't hatched out yet...so let's hope all goes well..

I put here the link to about 800 photos of falcons in Italy by Paolo.
Most were taken in Bologna-- Fiera-District and Cathedral.

Enjoy! :thumbup

These are simply unbelievable. Thank you Kim for providing the link to Paulo's stunning photos. They truly tell the falcon story at all levels.
