To me, it looks as if #2 is in the active stage of dying. I have even seen what look like agonal respirations, but right now they are not doing a close up. Even if a fish is brought in right now, I don't think it will matter for this one. He tried so hard to survive and this is heartbreaking ...

I went back and found where Ferenz documented the aggressiveness of Chick #1 to Chick # 2, but if you go further back, you can see Chick #2 was already in the active process of dying. A fish was just brought in a few minutes ago. No movement from #2, but they are not doing a close up and I am unsure if it is deceased.

Be prepared for "The Circle of Life" here, as Iris herself did this with chick#3, quite sometime after it passed.

:taz: I have wondered how this placed got the name "Hellgate" and I came across this commentary by someone on facebook:

"In pre settlement days warring tribes used to ambush each other in the narrow canyon. They weren't too fastidious about picking up their dead. The first French trappers to arrive there were appalled and referred to it as Porte d' enfer or gates of heck. A couple hundred yards East of the osprey nest stands a concrete pillar describing this in detail."

When the hel* word is entered, it automatically changes to heck here.

Still no fish, so far. Iris is calling for food. The cam op has located Louis on a tree, next to the river. I think Louis has been to the nest twice late afternoon, once when they had intruder flyby, that you could see the wingtip on cam! Both Mom and Dad went into alarm mode @that time! All is well, otherwise. Now Mom has left the nest, maybe to fish.

Hey, Piffle! Had trouble with my computer last PM, could see what was going on, but unable to type. A summary of today after reading Twitter: Iris brought in 2 small fish to feed the chick within approx 20' earlier today. She was off the nest many times today. Louis came in early this eve with a fish while she was gone. It took him awhile, but he fed the chick (isn't this a 1st this season?) for almost 3'. Then he watched the skies for a long while. Suddenly there is alarming I think from Iris as she returns and the chick pancakes and the parents had a spat(?) of sorts that led to Louis flying off with the fish. I saw this on video. He may have returned with the fish, but I'm unsure. There is speculation that Iris only had a few bites today and she is hungry causing some of her mantling and fierceness with Louis. I did notice about 3-4 days ago, she looks as if she has some weight loss. I think she brought in another small fish tonight that she was able to get some bites and the tail of.
