Aberfoyle, Scotland: Clarach's hatch window has opened >>> 3 eggs were laid on 4, 7 and 10 May.

If she follows her mother’s well established pattern of 37, 36 and 35 days to hatching for eggs 1,2 and 3,

we might see osplets on 10, 12 and 14 June...

From the Loch of Lowes Blog:

Osprey Update frome June 5th, 2017

After what seems like weeks of hot sunny days, the rain has come! The land could certainly do with a soaking and the level of the loch was

Our ospreys are doing very well despite the weather extremes. From daytime temperatures of 8 degrees to 27 degrees, baking sun to wind and rain, they continue to eat, squabble and sleep.

The eldest chick has even taken to copying its Mum (LF15) and tidy the nest!

Over the last few weeks there have been several intruding ospreys bothering our nesting pair. Usually the male will go up and join the female on the nest for added protection, but if the intruders persist it sometimes takes a concerted effort by the female to finally get rid of them.

Today we have seen 2 buzzards high over the loch but the ospreys took no notice. Then, 2 ospreys appeared and the male took off and dive bombed them until they moved away down the valley.

Our male (LM12) is bringing in plenty fish and treating visitors in the hides to shows of his fishing prowess! All going well, we would expect to see them fledge around the first/second week in July.

The poor Great Crested Grebes did not appreciate the heavy rain – their 3rd nest amongst the water lilies dispersed into the choppy water and they are now rebuilding – again.

Apologies for the lack of Squirrelcam today, we are working at restoring the live link.

Sound on the Osprey Nestcam from June 12, 2017

A little while ago we wrote about the vandals attacking our microphone on the osprey nestcam. These were great tits who were pulling the fluffy covering off the microphone to use for nesting material.

Once again, we are experiencing problems from the sound/microphone area beside the osprey nest but this time we don’t think it can be blamed on the great tits.

As viewers of our cameras will have noted, the sound has stopped. We realise this is a loss to many people, as it is for our visitors in the visitor centre (no sound here either).

We are working hard at finding the cause and restoring the sound and can only ask for your understanding and patience. Should the fault turn out to be over at the tree we obviously cannot explore options while the ospreys are in residence.

Meanwhile, our two osprey chicks are doing very well. LM12 is bringing in regular fish (9am this morning being the last, as I write) and LF15 is doing a splendid job of keeping them as dry as possible in the rain showers and as cool as possible when the sun shines.

On the loch, the great crested grebes have managed to lay four eggs in their precarious nest. This is their 3rd or 4th nest because the winds keep making choppy waves and breaking it all up! We wish them luck for the coming weeks.

:girlsad3: Again, I am unable to view the cam from this site and actually was able to pull it up only once this season. Really miss them here!

I wish we could fly. By Kayleigh Brookes on June 9, 2017

The two Manton Bay chicks are looking absolutely fantastic.
They have passed through the "dinosaur" stage of development and their beautiful juvenile feathers are coming through –
they actually look like ospreys now! Here they are with Maya, all of them watching 33 as he flew away from the nest...

Loch of the Lowes, Scotland: Ringing Chicks and Osprey News by Jane Hamilton

Based on the wing length we believe the older chick (now PH2) is a female and the younger chick (PH1) is a male – females are generally a little larger. The new rings will be very useful for us as the chicks are getting older and the size difference between them is now less noticeable.

Aberfoyle, Scotland - Clarach & Mr. C

Quote:
Sad news from Aberfoyle.

The youngest chick died yesterday afternoon and is no longer in the nest today. Clarach was seen taking the body away at 12:12 today.

It has been particularly wet and windy at Aberfoyle since the third chick hatched, but there is a sliver lining:

The forecast looks good for the next week or so and with one chick gone, both the remaining chicks now have a greater chance of making it.

They have both just fed and the two of them look great.

An awesome tribute to Glesni's & Clarach's Rutland ancestors

New generation By Kayleigh Brookes on June 18, 2017:

Quote:
...It’s also nice to see that Rutland ospreys are venturing further afield and have helped the osprey population to spread into other areas of the UK. For example, from ring numbers we know that one of our translocated males, 11(98), went to North Wales and bred there for ten years, raising 27 chicks. Also, both females that have bred at the Dyfi Osprey Project were/are Rutland-fledged birds. The current female, 12(10)/Glesni, is the grand-daughter of the infamous 03(97) or “Mr Rutland” as he was known to some – the very first translocated osprey to breed at Rutland Water, who bred for 14 years and raised 32 chicks. Click here for more information about 03. http://www.ospreys.org.uk/a-lasting-legacy/

This year has brought about some special news regarding 03(97). One of Glesni’s chicks from 2013, 2R/Clarach, is breeding for the first time this year with an unringed male at Aberfoyle in Scotland, and is currently raising two chicks! This is fantastic news for Dyfi, Aberfoyle and also Rutland, as Clarach is the first great-grandchild of 03’s to breed, and therefore her chicks are 03’s first ever great-great-grandchicks!

Clarach isn’t the only great-grandchild of 03’s to return to the UK, as Rutland-born male 4K(13) returned to Rutland in 2015 (click here to read more
http://www.ospreys.org.uk/a-century-of- ... preys/&#41 However, 4K is yet to breed. Clarach visited Rutland in April this year before heading north, and we would have loved her to stay here, but it doesn’t matter where she breeds, we are happy that she is and has brought the fifth generation of 03(97) into the world!

You can find out more about Clarach on the Dyfi Osprey Project’s blog.

Here are some videos and photographs of Clarach and her chicks, courtesy of The Lodge Forest Visitor Centre at Aberfoyle.
