I'm trying to figure out if that tower still has funtion or if its now just a landmark that houses...yankee is back..she's on the perch

It still produces steam electricity for the university, just had the document up. Last year they replaced the liner inside the tower.

Sorry I missed that...replaced the liner? Maybe they didn't insulate that box well enough and it is now like a sauna!!!

She's back in the box, not 2 seconds and is already panting..its gotta be the box...I watched her on the perch...no panting that I could see...and I would have thought after exertion of flight, she'd be out of breath..but, didn't appear that way..

I wonder if anybody can go up there and get a temp reading of that box!!

If there is extreme heat, I'd hate to think what it has done to the eggs..

Carly, to these untrained eyes, she doesn't look sick to me...and the way she is holding her wings out, makes me thinks she is just burning up in there...

As I said, watching her for the few seconds on the perch, there was NO panting...if there was a respiratory issue, wouldn't she be panting everywhere...especially after flying up?

I've been worried about the ventilation for them. It's really not hot at all here today and really it's been a cool spring. Poor Yankee and Dixie and the eggs!!!! This is really so sad.

The only other bird I have seen with Aspirilligous (I can never remember how to spell that) had runny eyes and was very lethargic!!

You would think yes. Sally posted her observations on April 16th so that a few weeks, if she did have something like a respiratory illness, by now she'd barely be able to breathe I would think. I remember some of the ones we've seen over the years, they went downhill fast.

yes...and we would see it...several years ago, a strain killed all the chicks in Seattle!!

I am pretty sure I heard there was a maintenance/engineering crew in that building but they moved to a different location last year.

I've been looking for crops over the last few days and I can't say that I've seen any. One time I thought I saw a small crop.................

OK...somebody needs to go up there and check the temp of the box...I'm sure there is a door to access it that they use for banding...it may be after they did all the renovations, that they forgot to re insulate the box OR there is now a direct heat source that is affecting that box in some way that wasn't there last year.

anyway, something has changed...I just don't know what at this point!!

I mean, we've seen birds, especially eagles and osprey, withstand some pretty severe heat...so, I would think the pefa could too...the only difference, open air nests, as hot as they are, at least have air circulating!!

I have contacted Joyce and am going to send her my observations...I now it's only 4 hours or so but might help and I've added screen shots. She's not panting on ledge..can see side of her now.

I'm sure they will be very helpful!!

I think the fact that she is not on the eggs could be that she knows they are too hot...

My final, unscientific observations....she's not sick...if she was, she'd be lying down...and yet, she is up and preening...a sick bird stops preening and she is currently going to town!!

Something has got to be wrong with that box..

Yes it is very tough. I've just read all of your input and I'm digesting it right now. There is so much I don't know. Anyways thank you so much for writing to Joyce Carly. Like SGB says there just has to be access to that box. Hopefully this can all get turned around.
