11:18 pm~Dixie in the nest, away from the eggs. Does not appear to be panting. (in fact, I can't even see her breathing, LOL...but, she is) Wings are a little droopy....I can't tell anything from cam #2

Image

yankee from this morning...

Dixie...when she had returned to the box and would go in, go out, go in, etc...

I'm not sure what to make of the fact of her not even standing over the eggs...

11:49 pm

Temp: 47 F/8 C

I just can't figure this out...she is now awake and mouth breathing, but not panting...wings are quite droopy (she's done some preening on and off throughout the evening)..she's now turned her back to the cam..she has not been on the eggs all evening..

.and I'm going to bed...

6.12 am and I have to log to go get ready for work and won't have access to the cam at work. I leave Dixie on eggs, panting but otherwise alert.

 Thank you Carly. I will be watching when possible today. Right now Dixie is standing; not panting though!

Unfortunately I'm on my way out the door..

Appears that Yankee is on the eggs, panting away...he has them completely covered...not even seeing shell....

I hope today goes better for this nest...sorry I can't be of more help.

Back this evening..

Poor thing is standing in the doorway repeating the movement shown.
Reminds me of a repeated (over and over and over) crop drop:

Image

Could only see the eggs, no chick.

Added: 12:39pm
Parent moved to incubate. Can't see much, head out of view. Tail is bobbing, doesn't seem to be as forceful as before.

It looked awful, Carly. Her beak/mouth didn't stay open, it was, "open - close - open - close," really reminded me of a crop drop - the only way I could describe it. It did look like she was having trouble breathing. I even closely checked the time clock thing to make sure the video wasn't stuck - it wasn't stuck.
Poor thing.

No panting, no discomfort evident. Closing eyes occasionally.

Image

Darn! as soon as I posted this, I went back to continue watching...
Mouth open now....

4:01pm
Looks ok now. Eyes closing, relaxing. Occasionally chirping -looks like quietly chirping.

4:12pm
Looks fine, dozing off.

4.24 - Home now and Yankee looks ok, of course he hasn't spent the day in the box either. Wish we knew if Dixie was eating out there and where she was.

I'm home now too and saw the same as Bon Bon! I wonder what is going on here.........

I'll be watching this evening and plan to drive over there tomorrow with my binoculars to see if I can see anything.........

It's so sad because last year their chicks were taken from them because of the construction and this year I just don't know what is happening. I am trying to keep it all in perspective but I just feel so bad for this great couple!

I am so very thankful I've met up with this wonderful forum and with all of you caring and wonderful people! You all are the best....

Sally

hi Sally,

Glad to hear you are going out. I really wish they'd have people on the ground there just to see how she is doing outside. For example: is she eating? big chunks or small bites, would indicate blockage or growth in throat. Is she pooping normal? I know that sounds gross but white wash is normal, yellowish, green or black is bad, and indicates some sort of disease.

It's hard to judge on nest box only - she was much better this early morning and by end of afternoon after several hours in there she's looking rough again. Then she flies out like a champ and comes back refreshed...? Will she do so again today?

Raptors do hide their illnesses so as not to appear weak to others but most diseases will kill a raptor in 3 to 7 days save though there are a few that progress slowly.

We'll see how she is when she comes back again, it's so hard to watch and not be able to help. Wildlife today has it so tough, any loss is one loss too many in my opinion.

Thank you for your insight! It's good to know these things. When I saw her tail feathers shaking a lot a couple of weeks ago I thought well maybe she's egg bound. I know very little about "egg bound" but she seemed to be in a lot of discomfort with the panting and her back end shaking. I agree with your statement on wildlife and loss!

Cam is freezing a lot for me tonight. I was able to get a couple of captures just seconds apart. One seemingly relaxed and the next with mouth open.

Correction;
7:42am
Looks like Dixie? on eggs, she looks fine: no panting, no gaping, occasionally glancing outside.

Good luck if you go today, Sally.

I'll try to keep an eye on cam today...
