I've been checking from approx. 11:30am to 12:30pm - Don't know who is on the nest and their head isn't showing now, but everything looked FINE when I could see head!
Crazy!
12:38pm Head not visible now. Doesn't look like falcon is panting.

1:00 pm....Just checking in (remotely..LOL)

Dixie has been off the eggs for a few minutes now...out on the perch, staring back into the box, sometimes with intensity...its like she's staring at us as we're watching her...seeing her reflection?

No cracks/pips showing on the eggs...Nice breeze out on the perch...no panting, etc..

Back later...

I wrote to the DEC today and heard back promptly. I just spoke to the Buffalo DEC office and they are aware there is a problem and "help" is on the way. However, they could not tell be when!!! Anyways I will let you know more later as my sister is out in the car waiting for me. The fella at the DEC office in Buffalo was very kind and reassuring.

More later,

Sally

PS He could not give me any idea on what the problem could be!!!!!!

HI Sally, Just got home and thank you so much for contacting DEC!! Cam is up, no direct sun in box now and no panting observed.

You are the best, thank you for doing this! I am happy to hear they are going to try to help, good on them!!

I know that the DEC has been monitoring the UB situation for a while now and this was just posted on Peregrine Place FB page:

UB - Day 40 of incubation. This is not good. In this area, hatchings may start by day 29, generally between day 30 to 33. We are now a least a week overdue.
Since both Dixie and Yankee have shown signs of distress and breathing difficulties in the nest and the fist egg broke open and was empty, it’s likely the eggs will soon be collected and sent to be examined. This will also save Yankee and Dixie from having to continue sitting in the box endlessly. This is one of the hazards we face when watching wildlife so closely as we now can with cameras and the internet. We are always looking at them wanting happy endings but that isn’t always the way of nature. Very sad for sure. It’s up to the DEC to call it.
This is the part of my job that is so difficult
Right now, Dixie seems to be hearing or sensing some noise or movement on the other side of the nest box walls. Maybe this is Ken or another UB person checking what they can.

Thank you for the post Kris!

I am very thankful they are checking into the situation and the eggs will be removed!

It seems quiet right now!

I'm happy they're taking them out too! I'm thinking that maybe DEC wanted to wait until the hatch window closed before interrupting the nest, just in case an egg did hatch. I hope they find out what's going on..no problems before.

4.59 pm and Dixie just re-positioned, all seems good so far. Nice and shady inside at least. I think Yankee had the harder time as he had the 'sunshine' shift.

I am relieved but I am also very sad and emotional about the whole situation. So sad. :girlsad3:

I hope we will get some answers to what went wrong.

Me too!

This is kind of funny but when I am totally stressed or anxious I break out in hives head to toe. It happened to me on my wedding night many years ago and then when we divorced some years later. Today I had hives from head to toe. I am very uncomfortable but did get some benadryl.

Two years now they could have babies.........

But more than that I absolutely hate seeing them suffer!!!!!

Image Sally!!!

Thank you so much for contacting Buffalo DEC and for sharing their response...and to everyone for keeping watch/emailing/praying/fingers crossed...you name it. I am so happy they are so supportive of this nest and have been so responsive to all of us who have been so concerned!!! I don't think we could have wished for anything more...except to see little chicks being nurtured by Dixie and Yankee. Sadly, that's not gonna happen this year. I do wish there were bridge chicks that needed a home, but not if something is wrong with the box/environment of the area OR if Dixie and Yankee are sick....we would be even MORE stressed out watching that...

Kris, thanks for bringing over the FB post!!! I think if that egg was indeed empty like was mentioned on the FB post, I would think that would offer a great deal of info..

Sally...take care of your self...Hives are NO FUN!!!

Gosh, I've been watching Dixie now for well over 3 hrs...up/down/up/ down...and now she is way out on the perch...and now making her way back to the eggs...

Do you think she is sensing that the eggs aren't viable?

There has been no panting that I could see during this entire time..

I was up a few times and saw that Dixie was not on the eggs. Just now she was tenderly tucking them under her but then she stood up! She has her mouth open now but is not panting.

Here's hoping they can remove the eggs today.........

Ditto here - wings out, panting, panting...

Interesting that it's still early - shouldn't be that hot yet, but s/he still looks/acts hot...
Unless that's when they turn the machines on and it heats up to get started???

Can't tell who is there - just the tail end of tail (!) is showing - and it's moving as if the bird is panting.

:egg16:

(The south-facing side of my house is always super hot also. Never have the (heat) vents open - not needed.)
