Reminder that Catbird has done a fabulous job keeping up with the recent history of this nest.

More random pics from this morning...they are NOT cropped because I wanted to keep the time stamp on them. I have no idea how long this played out as I had to leave. Durand was echupping and bowing the majority of time I was recording this...and yes, the nest box is ahead of the ledge...its very confusing at times...LOL

So, would Durand be echupping and bowing if the other falcon on the ledge was a female?

Come home Spark!!!

I've never heard of anything like that before. Let's not forget Radisson probably killed that other female, well finished her off as she had already had another battle. I went back and read the original account from back in 2008 and it wasn't like this at all - and this is very different situation.

Balzac was injured and weak and about to lay eggs. Radisson was young, 2 years old and just taking over her first nest and probaby wondered why she was sitting in the box instead of coming out to meet her hence the curiosity. The sitting on top of the box by Radisson only went on for a half hour according to Bev's account then and she was lured out and Radisson ran her off - totally different situation.

not so different. RAdisson was on the box several times and several different days before she went to perch of box. I only reported, at the time what happened at that immediate time. what I am calling similar, is the femlae in the box, making strange sounds and the other falcon on the box. But not going to argue here, I was there at Edmonton, RAdisson did not kill Balzac, Balzac, was found a few weeks later dead , blunt force trauma. She flew into something. Gord said not markings of battle as she was in perfect shape.

And yes,Durand would not be bowing she would be doing what would look like bowing. moving around agitated, as we have seen at other sites. sometimes it looks like bowing. they get so excited and upset.

but on that note, I will bow out . no energy left in me for this. aside from my sites this has always been my favorte site from way back in Orville and Scout days.

:7val: for Durand and Spark

My favorite site too, Bev...

I don't remember the ins and outs of Radisson and Balzac...I barely remember yesterday..

I was merely wondering, out loud (or rather by typing), if Durand would be echupping and bowing in the box with this other falcon on the ledge if it was a female..

For documentation purposes. A recording OF the recording...so, its gonna be jerky and pretty terrible. Audio is from the ledge cam so that's why it doesn't match Durand's vocals...just wanted to document her behavior and vocals with this other falcon on the ledge.

Bev, you were wondering if this could be another female...that was the motivation for my earlier question..and that was would Durand be sounding like this if it was another female? I was actually being serious because I honestly don't know..that's why I put the question out there...

Also remember she "wails" (well, that's what I call it)..she would do this all the time with Spark when she was wanting more attention than he was giving here...its also been her call to canoodle..

Even though Spark didn't go on vacation last Fall, doesn't mean he hasn't taken a vacation this time...or maybe he sees no reason to waste any energy on this situation...I know, I know...I'm grasping at straws..LOL

NO Worries SGB
part of quote from SGB

that is why I originally brought up the idea of a female, becasue Durand was acting strange and becasue I had seen this behavior before at U of A and Bell sites, it just struck a chord with me.

I have notes for every year at my sites, so I can always go back and make comparisons.

But one thing I have learned over my many years of monitoring, is that every year is different, things change , and we see more and more things that we have never seen before.

That is nature, it is always changing. WE used to think Kakking was danger, and then we heard kaking when Durand wanted an exchange or prey brought in. I have heard so many different sounds over the years, the honking like a goose or a donkey, wailing, kaking, to tell mate off as well as defense.

So I guess, all will be a wait and see. It always is. It is always what it is. so Spark , everyone is waiting for you.:7val:

now I am going to go an d count my blessings. I have much to be thankful for today. :15heartbeat:

These are great pics, Sky. This is not a female. Take a look at the head shape when he is looking right into the cam. Very round with no brow ridge over the eyes. This is definitely a male. I'm going through all the pics with the band, especially the earliest one. The 2nd number looks like a "0" and possibly a "Z" underneath, but it's so hard to make out. I went back to see the numbers assigned to Durand's chicks over the years and there is no chronological order in the way Ohio assigned them. Jeez!

I think I just heard a call that is used for intruding peregrine's. No one on the ledge, but the vocalizer could have been on the roof or adjacent ledge. It was not an e-chup. Just very short chup chups. Hopefully, Sky got it on her recorder - about 9:10 am Kekking is not used for intruding peregrines. Gosh...who knows what is going on out there that we can't see. There is certainly a lot of unrest.

Someone just landed on the ledge vocalizing and quickly flew off.

I want to thank everyone for their diligent watch of the Columbus web cam and the drama going on here. My heart is apprehensive about Spark - I am not giving up on him, however.

Just wondering - does anyone remember, can the second nest on the Rife Center be seen and from what side of the building did Donna put thhe nest box? I would like to try to watch this site as well. Thank you for the assistance.

:leafwave: Hi Rosek. It was put up in Jan 2015 on the NE corner of the observation deck (31st floor). According to Donna's blog note of 1/27/15, it's in direct view of the Rhodes Tower nest.

Sky, are you recording? I just saw 3 birds circling in the distance at 12:29 pm. I got a pic, but they look like specks. Could be turkey vultures, but who knows?

Hard to see, two on the left and one on the right.

Carly, I've been seeing a lot of cruising by a bird in the distance the past few days. I assumed it was the new guy trying to impress Durand. If these are not vultures, Spark may be in the area. I agree, the ledge is extremely quiet today. There could be a power struggle going on away from the nest. Ack....I was supposed to be cleaning my apartment!!! Lol
