I was hoping they would wait a while but I don't know. First fledge may be a first fall - unintentional.
Well that first fledge happened exactly that way, a first fall!

Yes! He is at rehab. I am going to pick him up shortly and return him to the ledge. You must have missed this post from Monday!

Shortly after 6 PM, I received a call about a banded bird on the ground on Meridian Street just north of the circle.  I took Frank with me and set out.  With all the protests (and tonight it looked peaceful) I couldn't drive right there since no vehicular traffic on the circle.  Two awesome citizens were protecting the bird who was hunkered down in one of the alcoves of the SalesForce Tower right behind the church.
I thought it would be a grab and go, but the little bugger managed to scoot right out of there.  Flew low for about 10 yards but the young man who was helping got in front of him and he stopped immediately.  I put the net over him and got him crated to take to the Hattons.  With all that was going on, I did not want to deliver the bird to Market Tower.  I will do that tomorrow during the day.

M/73 - Rex (male) named for Rex Watters, a long time DNR wildlife biologist at Lake Monroe, retiring this year after more than 40 years of service.

Chris described him (Rex the bird) as "plump and well-fed"!

I included the pics taken at the Hattons plus an additional one that I think Rex would say "Yes Please"!!!

We took him back this morning to the tune of two angry parents serenading us. I am having difficulty with the pictures but I’ll work on posting them tomorrow.

Yesterday morning Peregrine Patrol buddy Sue and I returned Rex to the 31st Floor of Market Tower for a do-over. As soon as the door to the gutter was opened Willow and Jeffrey serenaded us with angry kak-kaks while dive-bombing and swooping all around. Sue was the photographer and she did an excellent job!

The serenade

And last night, he joined the big female on the perch. :flirty:

This morning both are gone from the perch. I saw one peeking back in, but don't know who it was.

Hi BJ! So good to see you here! Welcome to BCAW!!

LadyTrek (BJ) was the kind and concerned citizen who called rehab about a falcon down! It was such a pleasure to meet you and K. I hope I get to see both of you again!

The following pictures were taken Tuesday by a friend who works in a nearby bank building.
Five stories up is a large rooftop patio area then the building continues for another 20 or so stories. Per other office workers, this area is often littered with bird remains so they think it might be a favorite feeding area! We don't know who this is since the sly juvie managed to keep its bands on the far side!

DNR received word that McCoy S/03 was rescued due to injury. I have no details as to where he was taken yesterday. His number was reported to US Fish and Wildlife in Laurel MD. John hadn't yet submitted his banding report to the Midwest DataBase since he has 2 more locations to band.

Interesting that the main concern was not the condition of the bird, but issuing the Certificate of Appreciation.

I will report when I have more info.

I just received a call that he may be at the avian clinic. It is after hours so I can't find out anything until tomorrow morning. What are the odds that it would be another falcon... Will advise!

In the meantime we have two hanging around on the perch and ledge. We had a brief visit by Jeffrey, but no time to capture image.

This morning my friend Sue and I returned McCoy to Market Tower. Once again as soon as the hatch to the gutter was opened Willow and Jeffrey angrily greeted us. McCoy, unlike an uncertain Rex, bolted from the crate and immediately hopped/flew to the ledge and called out to his parents that he was home!

Here are Sue's pics.

In the crate about to be released.

Parents in attack mode.
Image

I love this pic with both parents against the sun backdrop!
Image

Immediately after racing out of the crate and another one with McCoy flapping.
See 2 other juvies in the background? We think a female on our left, and Rex on our right.
Image

Image

Our mission completed, we headed down to the circle and were immediately rewarded with seeing THREE FALCONS FLYING! We surmise it was Rex with his parents

From the location where Rex was rescued last week just north of the circle, we could see the larger falcon huddled against the light.

As it turns out, this bird was McCoy. He had quite the journey from Market Tower to Regions Tower on June 3 and then back to Market Tower on June 8th. Here is my friends account:
"I talked to security this evening. It was night out when McCoy needed the assist. He had somehow found his way into the parking garage. All of the glass was covered up except one revolving door. The security folks saw something move just outside the revolving door and looked up to see McCoy staring back at them. They weren't sure what it was but went outside to check on him. He didn't care for that too much, so he flew down into the basement level of the garage. They followed him down. He didn't appreciate that, so he flew straight at the guard until he ducked out of the way. McCoy took the hard left at the top of the ramp flying straight towards the building. Being a young falcon and new at the flying thing, he couldn't quite make the turn and brushed the windows, tearing a chunk of the protective plastic covering. He had a bit of a rough landing and was limping a bit, so security called IACS. While they were waiting, they tossed a blanket over him and he settled right down. Every so often, they would pull the blanket back to check on him. He would stare at the and talk to them a bit. I'm not sure if he was asking which way dinner went or assuring them he was ok.

Security was happy to hear that he was released back to the nest box and doing well. They were also a bit amused that they all have names. It was agreed that McCoy was a good name for him."
