Donna, if you look at the pictures before that feed, you'll see what looks like a chick head already there. I took a capture & enlarged it, but still couldn't really tell what it is (if its even a head). I'm thinking that its the head of some earlier prey. Frankly, after looking at the prior pictures, I don't think there was a third chick to begin with, but I certainly could be wrong.

CW, go to page 6 and look at the pics. Definitely 3 chicks, it was even in the paper that I read online.

SOUTH BEND -- A third peregrine falcon chick hatched this week on top of the County-City Building.

The adult pair of falcons that live downtown had four eggs this year in their nesting box atop the 14-story building. One egg was damaged, and the chick inside did not hatch. Two others hatched May 19 and 20, respectively. The third hatched Sunday.

Carol Riewe, a local naturalist and raptor rehabilitator, said a biologist from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is scheduled to band the chicks next month. SouthBendTribune May, 28, 2011

In one of the pics above it looks like mom is feeding the dead eyas to the other 2. I blew it up and it looks like the eyas head. I wanted to faint. I've seen it happen in the NL's nest site. Kaver, one year removed a dead eyas from the nest. He took it right out. We watch and learn.

BTW, A & B mated this am...again! Ya never know. So sorry you all for the loss of the little guy.

In the pics I posted, Guinevere left the nest and came back with food. I don't know if she went hunting or took food from Zephyr or from a cache, but she returned with food to feed the chicks.

If I had any such pics as you suggest (which I don't), I certainly would not be posting them.

The unhatched egg is now open.

Sorry, Donna, I was wrong. At one point there were 3 chicks. But nevertheless, whatever object was by the chicks had been there before that feeding.

Mother Nature can teach us all in many ways. Here, She teaches us to focus on the positives and not the negatives. Good advice.

Oh Alison, I meant no disrespect, I even saw the cam with the same pic you posted. To me the prey looked white and when I enlarges it, well, maybe my imagination went wild. I'm so sorry. It was just laying there for a while. :( My bad!

I was pretty busy all weekend and didn't have an opportunity to see any feedings except last night. As dusk approached, Zephyr arrived with food and they had a good meal to put them to bed for the night with full crops. Same thing happened at the same time at IPL.

I got this and thought oh no not another buts its about # 3
Another falcon chick dies in South Bend
SOUTH BEND — A peregrine falcon chick that hatched last week atop County-City Building has died, said Carol Riewe, a local naturalist and raptor rehabilitator.

The adult pair of falcons that live downtown had four eggs this year in their nesting box atop the 14-story building. One egg was damaged, and the chick inside did not hatch. Two other chicks hatched May 19 and 20. The third hatched May 22, but has since died.

The two surviving chicks appear to be healthy.

When a peregrine chick dies, Riewe said, the mother typically will feed it to the surviving siblings. Apparently, that is what occurred in this case, as there is no sign of the chick’s remains in the nesting box.

Thanks, KF...of course, we've also observed the parent removing the deceased chick from the box instead of feeding it to its siblings..
