And they also reported that the adults keep their food cache in the nest box. Not great on all the little details. When I saw the headline, it did appear that "another" bird had died, but it was the only bird that died. Think I may refer that writer to BCAW.

GREAT IDEA at least they will get the full story and get it right
I believe myself that the parents know what is best and they do what is natual to them that is why its so great and interesting to watch these great birds. That is just my opinion anyway

And I agree with your opinion of the parents knowing what is best KF. I may not always like it, but I respect the ways of nature.

The same picture has been up for almost 24 hours. Wonder what the problem is. Think I will try to find someone to contact about it.

Please turn off the South Bend Cam - at least for now
I just spoke with Carol Riewe who is the local South Bend raptor rehabilitator about the frozen cam. She said, [and I quote] "There are just too many d----d people on the site."

They are working on it, but their system does not have the bandwidth to handle the load. I recommend we all turn the South Bend cam off for the time being. When you do visit the South Bend site, don't leave it on continually.

Thanks Alison. The chicks seem to be doing very well.

Glad the cam is unfrozen. Hopefully we can keep it that way. As hard as it may be, thanks everyone for limiting your time on this cam.

Looks like rain in South Bend. We may get some here in Indy before the day is over. Tomorrow temps are supposed to be in the 90s. Going to be hard to keep cool, both for the falcons and the people!

Too many people watching. Sorry. I don't think there is anything we can do about it except use restraint. I know - hard to do...
Thanks for the meal report KF.

Another falcon chick dies in South Bend
When a peregrine chick dies, Riewe said, the mother typically will feed it to the surviving siblings. Apparently, that is what occurred in this case, as there is no sign of the chick’s remains in the nesting box.

I really don't want to address this, but the information in this article is simply wrong. When a chick does not survive, what usually happens is that after a period of time the little one is carried out of the nest, very gently, by a parent.

It is extremely rare for the mother to feed the chick to the surviving siblings. It is something which I have only seen once in the years I have been observing peregrines. That was at the King nest some years ago; there were two chicks, and one survived for only a few days. About two days later, Belinda was observed feeding the little one to the remaining chick.

This question was raised with Raptor Resource, who have been working with peregrines for over twenty years, and they had never seen this before. Their only possible explanation was that this might possibly have happened if the male was very, very, very late bringing food to the nest.

You are absolutely right Alison. I am trying to not give her too much grief since she more than likely volunteers her time and money to do her rehab work. I will see what the rehabbers I work with think about her misstatements and let you know.

Great parenting partnership with G & Z. We people should take some tips from them.
:girlluv: So nice to see these chicks thriving. Thanks SGB!
