Sad news from Catalina West End

Tragic loss of an eaglet during banding today May 28, 2015

Sadly, the eaglet at the Catalina West End nest died in the arms of the biologist during banding today. Here is part of what was posted this afternoon about what happened.

We are sorry to report that the bald eagle chick on the West End of Santa Cruz(Note: Assume he meant Catalina) Island died shortly after biologists retrieved the bird from the nest to be banded. The bird was not showing any signs of stress, when it hung its head and died while being held by Dr. Sharpe. This is the only death that has ever occurred during a nest visit and banding. Sometimes there are pre-existing congenita

Here is a link to the cam discussion if you would like to offer condolences to those who loved this eaglet: http://www.iws.org/interactive_nestchat_allUstream.html. I know also that because it happened during banding, many may have strong feelings regarding the situation, so I have started a special discussion post on Eagleholic Talk, an independent forum where you can post your thoughts. http://twizzkid.com/2015/05/banding-sha ... -thoughts/

I was alerted to eaglet death from post on the Atlanta falcon cam SS

Very nice pics folks. I googled for the eaglet banding death - and YOU are there - in google! :egg14:
Thot ya'd be interested.

I've taken your post to let others know what you found.
RRP also has a post. People ask on falcon cams - news travels fast n wide.

Here's what RRP has

Tragic loss of an eaglet during banding
Sadly, the eaglet died in the arms of the biologist during banding moments after being removed from nest.

Here is what I posted on RPP
Thanks to all of you for posting. The Atlanta falcon cam SS mentioned this sad event, so I looked for posts and found your links.

REMEMBER to keep PERSPECTIVE
Many juvies never make it thru their first year. Dont blame banding teams, they do a valuable service - to the birds, and to us. I am very eager for the Baltimore falcons to be banded to check for bugs and health. Biologists can treat most conditions if need be, a service to the birds. This is only one eaglet lost, and while sad, its only one. The Florida eagles had 2 eagets and 1 died in the nest 2 years in a row. Keep perspective - for your own good.

Turtle Bay/Redding

Redding eagles making a new nest

REDDING, California - Friends of the Redding Eagles this past summer raised some $4,000 to improve the video camera in the tree where Redding’s famous bald eagle pair nest along the Sacramento River.

Eagle fans had a high-definition video camera mounted above the nest so viewers could watch and listen to events live as they are streamed online.

But the eagles may have other plans.

The eagles have started working on a new nest about 100 yards to the north of the nesting tree they had used for many years.

“Obviously we are all a bit shocked and saddened that they won’t be in the nest that we just put in two new HD eaglecams with sound!” Terri Lhuillier, an eagle fan from Redding, said in an email. “But, they know what’s best!”

Eagle fans had noticed the pair, Spirit and Liberty, had not been visiting their old nest, which is on the west side of the Sacramento River and north of the Highway 44 bridge.

Then on Saturday Lhuillier said she saw them working on a nest at the new location. She said the eagle camera can’t be installed on the new tree during nesting.

The eagles typically arrive in the nesting area in October and begin working on their nest during the fall. Liberty typically lays eggs after the first of the year and one to three eaglets are born sometime in March.

A pair of eagles has been nesting along the river for more than eight years. They first gained exposure in 2007 when state Department of Transportation officials tried to drive them away before crews began work widening the Highway 44 bridge.

But the public rallied around the eagles and Caltrans let them stay. At the time, the eagles living in the nest were Patriot and Liberty, but Patriot was killed in 2013 while fighting another eagle. Since then, another eagle, who has been dubbed Spirit, has taken up nesting duties with Liberty.

Lhuillier said she was concerned for the eagles because the new nest is closer to a nearby hiking trail, and when the weather improves foot traffic in the area could disturb the birds.

There is still a chance that the two eagles, Spirit and Liberty, will lay eggs in the old nest and use the new one as an alternate.

“A lot of people are saying they may still come back to the nest,” Lhuillier said. She wasn’t sure why the eagles moved, but said the old nest appears as though it is leaning slightly.

While the new nest is farther away from where eagle fans used to watch them from a trail near the Highway 44 bridge, Lhuillier said she is glad they didn’t move their nest even farther away. The eagles have moved before, but the last move was only one tree away.

Lhuillier, a teacher at Stellar Charter School in Redding, said having the video images streamed online was a good teaching tool. This year, with the new cameras, they added sound and could remotely move the cameras to better follow what was happening in the nest.

But if the eagles remain in the new tree, viewers will see only an empty nest.

If the eagles don’t return to the old nest this year, eagle fans will have to wait until next summer to move the eagle camera to the new tree. The eagles usually leave the nest in August and return in October.
