"Bald Eagle Live Chat with Expert Dr. Peter Sharpe

The magnificent birds of the Sauces Bald Eagle Nest on Santa Cruz Island, CA are raising two eaglets, protecting them from the elements and tenderly feeding them beak-to-beak.

It's a perfect time to learn all about these largest of raptors from our Sauces live-cam partner, Institute for Wildlife Studies and its program manager and research ecologist Dr. Peter Sharpe.

Join us on the Sauces Bald Eagle Cam today, April 12th at 12pm PT to ask Peter about his work in bald eagle restoration on Santa Cruz Island, wildlife conservation, and the life-cycles of bald eagles and other raptors! Simply type your questions in the comments section below the player. We can't wait to hear from you!

Never stop learning,

The Explore Team"

Turtle Bay aka Northern California Eagles
the 2 Eaglets have their names
"Birdie" and "Bogey,"

The two newest eaglets from Redding's famous bald eagle pair have been named.

Going with a theme consistent with where the two eagles were born, online voters overwhelmingly chose to name the birds "Birdie" and "Bogey," two golf terms.

Friends of the Redding Eagles confirmed earlier this month that two bald eagles hatched in a nest in a tree on the course at Riverview Golf and Country Club in Redding.

Successful banding day at the IWS Sauces nest!

"Yesterday, the two eaglets at the IWS Sauces nest were successfully banded. It was a little bit longer than usual before a parent returned, but the parents could be heard vocalizing throughout the afternoon and one did stop by before dark, and this morning they have had a couple of good feedings, so all went well and the eaglets received the tag numbers A-62 and A-63. link to cam: http://www.iws.org/interactive_nestchat_allUstream.html"

New cam: Bald Canyon nest on San Clemente Island which is part of the Channel Islands
Image

The IWS (Institute for Wildlife Studies) in California has brought us many wonderful eaglecams over the years and they have just added a new one called the Bald Canyon nest on San Clemente Island which is part of the Channel Islands located off the California coast. The parents are A-32, a female, hatched in Alaska and then later released on the Islands in 2004 and K-76, a male hatched on the Islands in 2007. The two little ones currently on the nest were hatched April 9th and 11th. Here’s a map to better show where the island is. And of course the link to the cam: http://www.iws.org/interactive_nestchat_allUstream.html or http://www.ustream.tv/channel/mzGQjgFW5e3 (on our main cam list you will find it listed with the IWS nests)

So sad. It could be an indication that the DDT problem might be more persistent there then all may have hoped, I fear.

Quote:
The Sauces birds laid and lost another egg today. Looking at the history of the nest, it has failed in 5 of the 9 previous nesting attempts, with 2 different males and 3 different females. Male A-28 was present 2008-2011, and the male A-40 from 2012 to present. Female A-02 was present in 2008-2009 and failed both years. Female A-27 was present from 2010 until she was displaced by A-48 in 2013. A-27 was successful every year except 2013, when ravens took the eggs. Female A-48 was unsuccessful in 2014 and 2015, and had two chicks last year. Why the eggs are breaking so quickly with the current pair is hard to say. Unfortunately, we can't get information on potential contaminates from eggshells; only from egg contents.
