Bob will finally get some "peace" from Peace...lol.

I have really good news. I am looking at the Audubon cam right now and Peace is perched on the highest perch...15 feet up at the end of the flight pen where the pond is. He couldn't make it up there earlier today, but he is definitely up there now. Woo hoo! One step closure to release.
:ohyes: :sum9: :sum9:

I missed the post by the American Eagle Foundation that came later in the day about this milestone by Peace. Here's the video from the cam site of Peace's flight to the top perch. Hopefully, he'll be going home soon to his family.

:hapdance: Great news! Hope followed Romeo back to the nest today...hungry for that fish he flew in with. Check her out on this video - courtesy of American Eagle Foundation:

Peace is flying well and perching high. They expect his release very soon. It will be great to get this whole family back together again.

you can see how windy it is and has been. that could be one reason why she is not landing in net and also , if they are feeding her off nest, no reason to return to nest.

I still think she flew too early and has to hone her skills yet.

good to see her though. lots of white under those wings still

:6snowflake: Hi Bev. The white you see is her feather coloring. not baby down. Hope has the most beautifully variegated feather coloring. I often watched her in the nest before fledge. When the wind separated her feathers, they were white half-way down the shaft or near the base. Very beautiful. Here's another video of her from the approach cam, courtesy of American Eagle Foundation. You can see that she navigates the high winds quite well. It's a long video, but her flight toward the nest is at the beginning. The remainder is Romeo, catching his breath before taking off again. It was probably wise of Hope to abort a landing in high winds that involved negotiating between branches. You can hear her squeeeeing....lol. With time, she'll get better at it.

thank you Nadia.

I am so used to checking falcons for their white down on feathers that I forget, eagles do not fully loose all that till 4th or 5 th year.
she is a beauty adn I am glad her loyal followers got to see her.

I am nervous for them to release Peace back in area though. We will see what happens

Yup...I never realized how long it took for bald eagles to become sexually mature and get their adult coloring. AEF feels that releasing Peace near the nest is best since he has imprinted on the area. The parents, along with his sibling are still present. They will recognize him and visa versa. There are also other young eagles in the area. A 4 yr old came into the nest today, thought to be one of the prior kids based on a white feather patch on the pantaloon, similar to Juliet's. A 3 yr old also visited the nest in the last few wks - spent some time perched near Hope before she fledged. My understanding is that juvenile bald eagles hang out together to improve their chances of finding food. Peace's release would be from the ground in an open area, near the nest tree. This morning, I saw him fly up to the high perch in the flight pen with no problem. He's looking good. :ohyes:

12:11pm - Peace on the high perch, right in front of the cam at Audubon. He is doing very well...flying the full length of the 100 ft flight pen between the two 15 ft high perches. His landings are good. Due to rainy/stormy weather in the area for 24-48 hrs, they are postponing his release until it clears.

:hapdance: :hapdance: Peace was released in the Hamlet this morning. I'm waiting for a video by AEF. It appears that he flew well out of the box and perched high. He is in the preserve, near the nest.

Oh wow, Bev. I wonder if she knows her baby is back. I don't have cam access right now. He will have quite a story to tell Mom.

Here's a video of Peace's take-off during release. Nice and strong. I understand Juliet flew overhead as they were saying a prayer for Peace, just before his release. So glad he's home. They banded him. Green band on R leg and silver band on L leg. I understand he flew from tree to tree. :15heartbeat: Video courtesy of American Eagle Foundation.

Yup! Here is a nice tuck-in report by Gretchen last night regarding yesterday's release of Peace and his status by the end of the day. I have also attached a video of his capture in the pen, banding, release, and travels through the preserve. Courtesy of American Eagle Foundation.

gretchen_AEF: Tuesday's Tuck-In Report: Our Peace was released in the Hamlet this morning. . .need I say more? Ok. . .once the box was opened, he flew a perfect flight immediately. We found him perched at a distance with crows celebrating his freedom (but he didn't think so!) . They chased him all over, as he flew from tree to tree and landed with grace each time. He has that down pat! He flew out of the Hamlet and hopefully will realize home is the other way. Hope was soaring above the nest as Romeo and Juliet were present. It was a beautiful day. . .Home Sweet Hamlet! Join us in the morning for chat at 10am-noon. SED Y'all

Thanks for sharing. I loved that it was a soft release with no fanfare. So much less stressful than the releases where they remove the bird from the cage and present it to the crowd before letting it take flight.

Please don't vilify me for taking this position. I know that allowing an audience is a huge PR move and can garner donations from the public. I simply prefer the method taken here.

Post subject:  Re: NORTHEAST FLORIDA, October 2016- September 2017

Both Romeo and Juliet paid a visit to the nest this morning at different times. Later this morning, Juliet was seen soaring over the Hamlet, along with one of the kiddies! Not sure which one. I'm thinking Hope, since she has been seen soaring and I suspect Peace could still be getting his bearings with his new found freedom negotiating the landscape with wind, trees, and badgering crows, etc. I don't have cam access from the office, but I understand it is a beautiful day for soaring. :15heartbeat:
