Thanks Terka!!! I just came to post the pics of the new box...but, see I'm too slow..

I believe the wood is Cedar.

Here's what they wrote on Facebook

The sharp-eyed watchers at Great Spirit Bluff noticed the new nest box we put up yesterday! John designed the box to address the blackfly issue. While you can't see it very well from this view, we have a ventilation port on the side to provide airflow, which will help keep blackflies down. We didn't put in a screen porch, but John did add some more slats between the inside lip and the outside horizontal perch, which should help catch any young falcons that slip out. The box is also a little deeper, which won't prevent 38-40 day old falcons from fledging, but could help keep 18-20 day old falcons in.
The yellow goo is Wonder Stuff. Given that we didn't appear to have blackfly problems in our natural cliff nests this year, John thought a slightly cooler box might help deter black flies. He left off the back off the box and contoured the sides to the cliff, but of course they didn't fit exactly. The Wonder Stuff is helping to seal the box from rain. We plan to go back down and chisel and paint it to resemble natural rock.
Installing a box like this is a lot of work, which is why I don't have any pictures of the installation itself. It took four people - John Howe, George Howe, Dave Kester, and Amy Ries - to get the box down through the brush and onto the cliff face. We used webbing to wrap the box and a pulley and rope to lower it. John and Dave went down with the box and got it into place using webbing slings as levers and guides. Once the box was in place, Dave and John attached it with expansion bolts. We detached the webbing, pulled it up, and used our rope to lower the gravel inside a large haul bag. I believe the box weighed 80-100 pounds, and the gravel weighed 80 pounds.
Sometimes we post about this stuff ahead of time, but this was a high-wire job and we preferred to wait until it was over. It was a relief to get the box done, and I can hardly wait to see what Michelle and Newman think of their lovely new home!

Another view of the nest box. You can see that it has no back, and you can also see the ventilation port on the side. The sides are very thick and built with cedar siding (which smelled amazing). The photo also shows (roughly) how the webbing was slung around the box for lowering. Webbing is very strong and easy to remove once the box is bolted into the wall. We didn't use the attachment points for lowering because we needed to put bolts in them, and because there was some concern over metal fatigue. The attachments points won't fatigue from holding the box to the wall - it's what John designed them to do - but they could fatigue from being bent back and forth too much as the box was lowered.

This was a very easy design to attach to the wall given that John's design gave us some play, which helped offset a less than level, even surface on the wall!

Looks very nice. Good choice of wood, red cedar is a natural repellent. I can't imagine what it took (strength and courage) to get the box in place. :nervous:

Great images right now on the webcam: Lots of Bald Eagles and either Snow Geese or Trumpeter Swans.
