Union county...This is "different"..I can't say I remember seeing a baby continually look up like this..it reminds me of an older chick that's trying to stay awake and eventually lays down..but, this chick is still standing as I post this..Cadence, so far, is making no move to bring it over..and its making no move to go to her..

Is it weird that baby is trying to sleep sitting up? Head tilted back. I don't think I've seen this at such a young age?

Cadence got up quick to go out of igloo & knocked baby, but baby is still sitting up. She came back. On eggs, snuggled closed , but baby still trying to stay upright. Can't tell for sure, but may be partially resting head on egg, but not sure.

Baby leaning against mom..

Image

Cadence rushed out for some reason (I wasn't paying attention to that cam)..

current...the baby still doesn't want to lay down (of course, it could be propped on an egg), but that head appears to still be up....

Good...finally something that looks normal...either we've got one very stubborn chick who was fighting nap time or something medical going on that we can't see..

Maybe the eyas is afraid that if it falls asleep lying down, the parent will try to drag it over by the eggs again. It looks to me as if baby fell asleep standing up or is indeed having some type of medical problem. By the way, this eyas's under-wing areas look better than Cadence's did when she was an eyas. Cadence had black areas under both her wings and under her crop as well. So did her brothers, Bronx and Genesee. I know we obviously have to be concerned about parasites here because of the loss of the other eyas, but this eyas looks pretty good compared to its mom at that age.

LOL, Patsy!! Thanks for that info about Cadence and her siblings. I'm sure this baby has some..I remember watching a Harrisburg banding one year and thought for sure they were covered in parasites..boy was I wrong...LOL...and it was clear during the banding when they would do the close ups of the chicks, there was nothing there...

Union

At the risk of being an alarmist, something is wrong with this chick..an injury (neck?), something neurological, I don't know..I wish they would respond as Richmond did and remove and evaluate this chick. Of course I think there's risk doing that. At Richmond, you had 2 remaining chicks hanging around to keep the parents interested..here, they'd have an empty nest..

Its able to move its legs, but can't seem to lift its head..at least while I was watching.

Tiga, I haven't watched your vid yet..I'll go do that now.

From the chat

We have been conferring with the wildlife biologist. She feels the eyas may have a neurological problem. The biologist is on her way but coming from a distance. When she arrives, the chick will be removed for testing and if it is possible, rehabilitation.
