Maybe somebody has remote access to the cam and can pull it back. I hate not knowing what is going on outside the box..

Looks like both of them are escapees now.
I was at a big concert last night right on the river behind this building, 10,000 people and the band was blasting. They do it every Friday. I kept thinking, those poor falcons, they are not excited about this at all, but I never saw them flying.

One is getting fed now, hope Ozzie is taking care of the runaway.

I have not heard anything, but I'm sure they will at least band them. I think that cage might be too much for a first year female, I hope they don't do that.

Both chicks are there now that the cam is panning out you can see them. So friggin hot today, pretty abrupt for these poor babies. Mom is with them.

Geez....I hope he can squeeze out from behind there! He went all the way to where you couldn't see him!

Goody! He came out and lay down in the bottom right hand corner of the screen where you can't see him.

Was watching the cam and parent was in the nest but no kids. All of a sudden here comes one out from behind the box on the left side looking at the screen, Right behind that one came the other one. Both in box getting feed. Wonder if they are going to put the cage up this year? These guys seem to be doing ok so they may not need the cage. I just don't want anything to happen to these cuties.

Nest Updates

Out of the Nest Box and Ready for Banding

Over the weekend, the falcon chicks began exploring their surroundings. They’ve left the nest box and have been exploring the building ledge, often disappearing off camera, either walking behind the nest box or walking past the camera. Please don’t be alarmed if you don’t see one or more of the chicks; they’ve typically both been reappearing when a parent arrives with food.

The chicks are now 26-27 days old (about 4 weeks). DGIF staff will be banding the two chicks on Tuesday, June 13th. Biologists will place leg bands onto the chicks that look like little metal bracelets and have unique number codes on them. These bands act as identifiers, which will aid in keeping track of the chicks’ whereabouts after they’ve fledged and into the future. As you may have noted, both of the parent birds have leg bands, which allows us to positively identify them when they return to the nest box each season. It is also how we identified the new female as having hatched on Virginia’s Eastern Shore and could age her as three years old.

While the chicks are being banded, a pen will be deployed in front of the nest box as a protective measure to prevent premature fledging before the chicks are strong enough to fly. The pen is large enough that it allows the chicks’ access to the nest box, room to explore some of the ledge, and room to fully stretch and test out their wings as they continue to grow. The parents are able to feed the chicks and pass food to them through the pen bars. A cover will be placed on top of the pen to provide shade and shelter for the chicks. Additionally, a mechanical device will be placed on the pen door that will allow DGIF the ability to open the pen remotely in a few weeks when it comes time for the chicks to fledge.

PLEASE NOTE: The cam will temporarily be turned off while DGIF staffs are on the building ledge. It will be turned back on once the chick banding and pen deployment has been completed.

Cage is up. Wonder when they will say the genders of the kids.

KIDS LOOK TRAMASIZED AS USUAL. No parents in site yet unless they are on top of cage. Kids keep look up.

Settling down for a nap right now. Will check back later. Maybe there will be an update.

I haven't seen anyone return yet, if you see the adults please let us know! Hopefully Ozzie knows what to do here.
