just a wee video of them before they headed down to th e south

a real bummer they took away the insert. that is where the kids are most of time and feeds are there etc.

We will not know when they fledge. :furious: :furious:

we can just hope for the best and look for 2 during day and night. But they will not always spend night in box either.

I am just lost for words( imagine that :egg11: )

I will have some photos tonight

I am here today to post some very sad news.

when Gord went to band yesterday , he found our chicks were sick. They have Ciccidia. A deadly disease and they have to be treated right away. He took the two sickest yesterday and had them tested to be sure. It is very contagious, so the other 2 will be removed today. they cannot foster any in as the box is contaminated and they do not how long it will be contaminated.

the chicks are thin and dehaydrated . He said growth was almost stunted. I do not know I missed this. The chicks are eating well, they had crops etc. they had at least 6 feeds a day.

Gord has set up a mini hospital out the back door o f his home and he will treat and feed them for 10 days. Then they will need another 10 days treatment. . they are on IV for fluids also. the hope is that they will be healthy enough to hack.

the box will be changed in the fall and new substrate put in.

so unfortunately for RAdisson and chase, the season will be over. I am just really bummed as they are such good parents

the important thing is we think we got them in time. :15heartbeat:

Gord just emailed me again and they will go at 2pm today . We had 3 tiny males and 1 tiny female

will post some shots later

Updates
June 28, 2017 – Devastating news at this site. During the banding of these chicks yesterday afternoon, it was discovered that at least two of the chicks are not doing well and were consequently removed for treatment and testing. Testing confirmed that the two chicks are suffering a very contagious disease called Coccidia. If two chicks have it, then it is a certainty that the remaining two chicks have it. As a result, the last two chicks will be removed from the box today. All of the chicks will be treated and hand-fed over the next ten days, but this effectively ends the nesting season for Chase and Radisson this year. There is no possibility of putting a foster chick in for this pair of falcons as the box is contaminated and the foster chick would meet the same fate. The good news is that adult peregrines are not as susceptible to this disease.

with bad comes some nice news.

our new female at Bell is : squeak 2014 hatch from Logan site , Winnipeg , Manitoba
her parents are hart and Jolie.

Our male is 2015 hatch from Weber Edmonton. His parents are Do1 and Green Girl. ( Green girl is RAdissons daughter)
so B32 and m49 are very distantly related( Radisson and Hart had same mom .

I have photos to post but having a hard time today.

What the heck? They looked just fine...but, I guess the cam only shows so much..I know this must be heartbreaking for you, Bev...but, even more for R and C!! OMG..they are gonna be so falcon sad... :girlsad3: :girlsad3:

Thank goodness Gord caught this in time...I have heard of Coccidia, but only in dogs and cats...so, I had to go to my trusty Raptor medical website..(I'm not sure how up to date the info and/or treatment is, but its still very helpful)...this is what it had to say..

Coccidiosis is a disease of the digestive system caused by a parasitic protozoan. This protozoan appears in two forms, Isospora and Eimeria. Isospora is the form found in Falconiformes and Strigiformes. These develop inside the cells that line the intestinal tract. As they take over more and more cells, the cells begin leaking preventing the bird from absorbing nutrients or liquid. This loss of blood and fluid is what causes the reddish (or red spotty) diarrhea that marks this disease. The loss of blood and fluids can be fatal. Merlins can be particularly susceptible to this and will rapidly decline.
Coccidiosis is usually marked by first by a lack of energy, then diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss or odd fluctuations in weight, lethargy, flecks of red in the mutes or bloody mutes, food flicking, foul smelling castings, and poor appetite leading to complete lack of appetite. The flecks of red in the mutes are blood spots, but sometimes the flecks are small enough to give the mute an overall pink color. If the mutes have turned completely black, then there is a significant amount of blood being passed through the tract and treatment at this stage is less effective. The castings are slimy as though greasy or coated in petroleum jelly, and may be brown and have a different smell. If reviewing your own fecal slides, this can be mistaken for Round worms. Note that these are much smaller than Ascarid eggs.
This is typically treated first by rehydrating, then with antibiotics such as Flagyl (250 mg/10 ml with 3 ml administered TID in food for 7 days), Baycox, Albon (250 mg/5 ml with 0.5 ml administered SID in food for 10 days), or Appertex (clazurilum). Once treatment has concluded, Benni-Bac (Avian Lactobacillus) may be a good idea to supplement with as the good system bacteria has also been reduced. Simple foods or an emaciation diet are good to get these birds stable.

They must be in the early stages (I hope)...I think we would have noticed a drastic change in poop color..

( they must be in the early stages (I hope)...I think we would have noticed a drastic change in poop color..)
this quote was by SGb.

and that i s just it,: we did not notice these signs. And they were eating and one was grabbing food and eating on his or her own.

Gord had the first two tested yesterday, and because it is contagious they have to take other two, but he did say they were very underweight. Those were two males he took today.

he will fill me in as time goes. the other two received first treatment this morning and are more spry after being on IV and hand feeding And he said they were hungry. and I cannot figure out why( well it was all going to parasites). but I have to quit beating myself up. a few years ago the whole cam world noticed the chicks were not well. but that disease, meant they could not eat and everyone saw it sticking to their beaks etc.

so we will continue to watch Radisson and Chase from below. It will take them a few days as they have been both coming in and feeding. I imagine they will look below box etc. and RAdisson will wait on building for them to come back. Gord always beings them back, she says. and then they will get on with being falcons. this is not the first nest this year that has ended up without chicks, for some reason or another.

it is just that we monitor so closely.

Gosh, how very sad. I have been watching them for a little while now and never noticed anything wrong. I feel so sorry for Radisson and Chase, but glad that this problem was recognized in time to save the chicks. I saw when the first two disappeared and knew they could not have left the box on their own, suspected something was up, but not this. :egg15:

I always feel sorry for the little hacked chicks too.

How sad. :girlsad3:
But also, how fortunate that it was discovered in time.
I didn't know this could happen in falcons but now that we do know, it is something to keep in mind. If in the future, we see some underdevelopment or a lethargy or "weird" coloured poop shots, we now know what might be the reason and alert people at the location.
I will post this news and info on some other forums, to make more people aware of this.

And now I am wondering how many times it has happened before, in other nests, without any observer knowing/realising this kind of infection could happen and therefor not realising that a sick eyas might have this [treatable] disease.

Check out the poo stains on the interior of the box, in the prior posts that actually have photos, and you can see the "brown", instead of the white on the walls inside the box.

we did see that Matrix, but we have the same at Weber box, and our chicks there are fine. WE really watch carefully . my recorder, as is the recorders of a few other people here, is on 18 hours a day for my sites. we missed it and that is that.
We were busy looking at feeds, as we had one 3 days younger than others and were watching that all got fed. We saw poops that were white, and missed others I guess. It is easy now to see things that could have been signs. but we saw 4 chicks eating well, responding to feeds eagerly, screaming up a storm, when they saw adults, and all our chicks at all our sites were lethargic, for a few days , as we had extreme heat.

The outcome will be positive and we can all learn. We are not perfect here. and no one caught it. hindsight is always great. once you know there is a problem, you can see signs. that is always the case. WE did not know we had a problem.

Our dear radisson and chase are still bringing prey to the box and radisson dresses it and chups as if feeding. this what they are wired for.

In time they will go about being the great falcons they are. we have to look at this as nature. We have been very fortunate in the past years. It was our time. It was a shock and sad but we have to think positive and be thankful , they are being treated. :15heartbeat:
I have not posted pictures lately but I will after our meeting tonight. We have been busy attending bandings and just life( we do have a life beyond this LOL)

Bell
hoping got get some pictures posted here also. Our chicks are behaving . they are 34 day s old today . they can be seen flapping and hopping along the gravel from north to south. We do not want them to go too far out on ledges, but they love giving us heart attacks. :egg11:
I do not know if you saw earlier posts but our female M49 hails from the Logan, Winnipeg site.( 2014) this is exciting news. sad it is not E4 but nice to see her here. Her name is Squeak.
Dennis , from Winnipeg has kindly sent me some baby shots which will be posted later tonight,

Ok, I have to say something.
I have watched Bev and Em put their lives on hold to watch tapes and live cameras for several years.
Bev would never put a chick or falcon at risk.
As many of you have watched sites that let the chicks die, live on camera because of policies.
Bev and Peter have a wonderful relationship with Dr. Gordon Court that loves peregrine falcons.
How many people out there have taken a downed chick home to dry out or wait for Gord to look at.
It is hard on us in the flacon watch to hear the negativity ( it appears to me) about our nests sites.

Tonight , would have meet and started planning our watch schedule for Radisson and Chase"s chicks.
With a heavy hearts we will be just below the nest area to plan for Weber instead.
We will all look up and have a few tears for lost of the chicks that they will not be raising.

But, they are alive and that is all that counts to us falcon watchers.

Please give a hand to all of the watchers that delicate their time to help falcons around the world.
