Yes Shep, that happened here. JJ was two timing with another female at a nest nearby. He was a really bad parent then and the chicks kept starving. It was pretty ugly for a few years. I know a few people here probably remember those years.

I was trying to think like JJ today.
If you take his babies before fledge,
he thinks he isnt reproducing, because predators take his young away.
He has 2 nests trying to produce offspring.
OK now y'all can laugh

He is trying so hard :15heartbeat: I talked to Bryan the other day about this and of course forget to ask him if it is even possible for a 1 yr old to lay an egg. I have no idea. I don't think so though, just thinking I've never seen a 4 yr old eagle lay one. But if she is almost 2 (late hatch from 2016) then maybe? Bryan said there was a second nest installed at the top of the bridge, but that is obviously not happening. He also said the old nest on the ship is gone that JJ might have been using before James died. I told Bryan that we know of at least 3 nests out of the 28 pairs that are having issues, including Richmond and a bridge that are being paved, and then there is Cobb? Not good. He is checking all of them this week.

Here a couple more shots from today, it was really quiet yesterday.

Shep, Elizabeth has been displaced for a while now... :girlsad3:

Barb, it is possible for a first year to lay fertile eggs, though rare...we've got it documented somewhere here on the forum..when I have time, I'll see if I can remember where.

Wasn't it in Belgium or Germany. I thought it was a 1st year that displaced a resident and she ended up laying eggs with 1 hatch. She was so cute... Probably close to 5-6 years ago.

OK...Found an example of a juvie and eggs.

2013 in Zurich, Switzerland!! She arrived at the nest on 2/14/2013 and was promptly named Valentine. Antonio, resident male, was immediately smitten with her. She laid 3 eggs..and 2 hatched!! (its all coming back to me now~Antonio had lost 2 mates prior to this: His beloved Carla (who died tragically in the nest with her kids. I'd really have to go back and find the cause) and Josafina, who was also a hatch year and spent the late Fall and and early winter (2012/2013) with him at the nest...another accidental tragic death)

You can check Valentine out in the archives!! (Thank goodness not everyone used photobucket back then!!)

viewtopic.php?f=479&t=1398&start=180

I'm pretty sure we have another example...but, can't remember right now.

Thanks so much for all the info!! I knew there was one out there in our history somewhere. So her feathers make her look younger, but her talons and beak are yellow. Well, it is nice to know its possible anyway. Valentine is such a cute name too :loveheart:
