All, just thought I would update you as we approach the 2017 nesting season. We have been meeting and consulting with experts from the Peregrine Fund and other sources. The general consensus is that Interior Urban Phoenix is too hot for peregrines to be consistently successful in rearing broods. We have suspected this for a long time but our interactions with experts are confirming these concerns. We are looking into a way to cool the nest box to increase the chances of nest success. So perhaps this year the birds will be nesting in an air-conditioned high rise apartment. We have several logistical problems to resolve and are working on nest box renovations this month. We hope to go live with the feed sometime in Feb as the birds start their pre-nesting visits to the box.
Thanks to you all for your input that helped us improve nesting conditions.
Best wishes for the New Year.

Another update posted today on FB by Randy Babb:

All, I thought i would take a moment share some updates with you. We will be making the first round of upgrades to the nest box late next week. We are waiting for approval from the County to install the AC unit so that will come at a later date. i will post some photos of the renovations and the work after we get them done. In the mean time, here is a photo of the male bird hanging out near the nest box late this morning.

We made some renovations tot he nest box today. Here are some photos from the effort. We cleaned out and calked the insides and changed the gravel. We also took some pest control (mites, lice, bird bugs). We also lowered the lip of the box so it was closer to the ledge which should facilitate the young birds getting in and out of the box. The lowering of the lip was an involved process and you will note we did not do a very good job at matching the paint...I don't think the birds will minds. We did a short video, when I have a link for y'all I will post it.
There are a lot of pictures, will try to post link and pics..... :girlcrazy:

All of the pictures have great descriptions, it looks like that they put a lot of thought into the changes that were made, researching and listening to their viewers!

Just saw another update on FB by Randy Babb:
All, the male has been visiting the renovated nest box and appears to like it. He has already made a depression in the new gravel in preparation for nesting. Keep your fingers crossed!

All, we have approval to install AC and are working to do so. We are hoping to have it all done before the month is out. The pair is spending more time at the nest box and today both were in the box vocalizing and preforming some cursory pair bonding behaviors. Happy Valentine's day.

Another FB update by Randy:
Falcon Fans,
A few updates and photos for your enjoyment and edification. The pair have been making frequent, though brief, visits to the nest box. These are usually noisy and in the form of the to doing this bowing behavior where they stand nose to nose, head down and call to one another. They have also been doing some prey exchanges at the nest box which are very short in duration and usually entails the male bringing in an item and the female snatching it away in the blink of an eye. Forrest Anderson Plumbing and Air Conditioning has reached out to us about helping with AC unit, which is wonderful because you could paint everything I know about air conditioning on the head of a pin with 4" brush. We are hopeful that they can help out. They will bring expertise badly needed for this part of the project. Regardless, it was very generous and kind for them to contact us and it is greatly appreciated.

Randy Baab posted on FB that there will be NO CAM this season... the falcons have nested elsewhere! He waited to double check - and it is confirmed.
