I read Kate's blog an d I watched slideshow. but , I am not an expert, but I truly believe the chick was not right. this was refresh cam. chick may have been dead. that egg was cracked for a few days. that i s not a good thing. I think everyone is so waiting for Hope to do something, that they do not think it through. it is nature, and the falcons know what is right and what i s not. . I tried the first year to explain how the chick was stuck to the shell and in trying to help it get unstuck, the chick transpired. our biologist explained to me what was probably happening, and so that is how I see things. I showed the video to him also.
last year when I tried to explain , I was asked, by someone to share this on the blog , which I did. but once someone has their mind made up, that's that . we are often told not to humanize, and this is one case.

to say it is abnormal behavior, is just one opinion. and it is not abnormal to feed a dead chick to siblings. Have seen it many times We have been blessed at most nests to see all that is good. but in reality, there are so many things we do not know. only Hope knows, what is happening and why..
so I guess I will just stay in the minority and just let things transpire how they do. I find it funny how at some nests that we do not watch, it will be reported , a chick is missing etc. and not another thought is given to it.

So I will just watch ( although the next few days my time is limited) and watch chicks grow under the watchful eye of Hope.
amen

:15heartbeat: Just saw a blocked feed. Hope was able to get some bites for herself, also. When she flew with remainder, saw the chicks already settling and no pips seen this view of eggs. Terzo came in and covered all.

SWINWK, I'm sorry you had a rough day yesterday. That's all I'm going to say and as far as I'm concerned, we go forward not backward. :7val:

I'm with you bev. I think something is not right with the eggs/chicks and Hope knows this. Maybe this third egg had the half shell of one of the earlier hatches stuck to it, covering the initial pip and causing the failure of a proper third hatch.

Anybody see them eat today, other than SWINWK first thing this morning? I sure don't have time to be on the internet all the time, but I've got some good captures of the Wilmington nest--they're eating all of time, it seems like. I know 5 chicks aren't the same as 2 but I'm not having good feelings about the feedings. I know Hope made some sounds like she was coming back to them and they cried for food (Terzo was on them.)

Came in on a feed that was already in progress at about 6:47 EDT. There are 2 chicks and 2 eggs. One of the chicks had it's head lying on one of the eggs and the other one has it's head raised, but beak closed and I suspected I had come in at the end of this feed. Hope was taking all of the bites at this point and did offer again to the chicks once before covering all at 6:50.

Edit to add: Just now seeing above post after I posted.

Just checking in and the chicks are covered. It's a very dreary-looking day and is currently raining here.

:buzzybee: Came in at 4:50 while Terzo was covering the chicks and eggs. You could tell one of the chicks was ready to eat as it squirmed under Terzo eventually sticking it's head out and it kept opening it's beak. Hope arrived with prey at 5:05 and fed the chicks (although it was a blocked feed for me) until 5:16 when she flew away with the remains. She seemed to take a few bites for herself at the end of that feed. For a good part of the feed, I could tell from the stills that the one chick was facing the wrong way, but did turn it's head around toward her and of course you can see from Terka's 2nd pic it was facing in the right direction for at least a part of this feed. Terzo flew in a minute after Hope left and covered everybody who seemed to have slipped into a food coma prior to his arrival. One of the eggs seems to have either debris or it could be a possible pip, but I'm leaning toward debris for now.

Thank you for the capture, Terka and thank you SWINWK for the information about them eating. So we know they got fed 2 times today. Wonder if we can get somebody to record them for one day and see how many times they eat. They should be eating every couple of hours at this age. :egg16:

:buzzybee: Catwoman, I actually had thought about that earlier while I was here as direct observation and the recording of feeds is the only way to know for sure. It can not be taped d/t the 5 minute time-outs. I will try and watch this nest "heavily" tomorrow and start a running note first thing in the morning after I get up.
