I am wondering if we have a new bird here and that's why only 1 egg.

I do not know them, but this looks like a male (?)....incubating..

Image

Falcon #2 arrives

Image

He (?) gets off the egg

Image

She (?) shows no interest in the egg...and leaves.

Image

What's confusing is that she (?) sounds like a he....but, it could be that audio.

New female would be the logical explanation for the lack of more eggs.

:imbored: Have been checking daily for Dr. Sharpe to weigh in, but nothing so far. They are questioning from that site, so think he will soon. She doesn't seem to want him incubating, he comes in and does and she shows up, he leaves and she doesn't stay long and then they repeat this throughout the day ...

i f we remember back to when this happened at Gulf, Louis tried to incubate the eggs laid by previous female . and the new female would chase him out. He would find a way to sneak back in. That was the year, the new female lay 2 or 3 more eggs o f her own. Once she lay them, she brought the others in with hers and , we were astonished when all hatched. I believe there were 5 in total

so if this has been a takeover, and the egg is just incubated enough, it could still be viable.

I have not been watching here much, but a takeover is all I can think of , why this is happening. I do not know this pair

Yes, I remember that. Pittsburgh Gulf Tower, 2010. Dori ousted Tasha after she had laid 2 eggs. She laid 3 eggs and eventually all 5 hatched and fledged.

i just sat and did an edited 12 hours here. I did it down to 12 minutes

She definitely not as aggressive as female was at Gulf. she is not interested but a few times she just stayed and he continued to incubate . she , a few times, scrapes around egg but no harm to egg.

guess a wait and see

Why no 2nd egg? Male very dedicated to his egg!
This pair lays late March. Did another female lay his egg there?
Someone on Anacapa posted what appears logical.

Rysx posted March 15
A possible nest takeover was mentioned earlier. I saw several situations with nest takeovers and the “old” egg was typically not destroyed by the “new” nest occupants. But there could be still another scenario: Initially, when our Mr. A arrived, another female appeared, Mr. A mated with her and she laid her egg. Then his regular partner showed up, chased away the usurper.
She would not be interested in this egg, while he would. It will become more probable if this female lays eggs at about her “regular” time.

The egg was laid March 8th, which is about 2 weeks too early for this pair. Peregrines lay up to 5 eggs, at a 3-4 days interval. We are supposed to have more eggs here by now, but there is only one.

So far, only HopperJet, the male, has been incubating the lonely egg. Lena, the female, keeps running him off. Today, she kicks the egg out of the bowl while making impression in the egg cup. HopperJet arrives later and tucks it back in.

I'm leaning toward the theory that this egg was laid by another female (a passerby?). The current resident female may or may not lay more eggs later. Since the birds are not banded, there is no way to know who, when, what and with whom. Stay tuned!

:shamrock2: Dr. Sharpe has weighed in on this nest. The following #1 and #2 are comments made by others yesterday that he commented under. Also, I want to add that for the 1st time for me at least, I saw the male here bring the female a prey gift this morning that she readily accepted and left and he promptly got on the egg. And that the normal times the female here has laid her 1st egg was on or about the 24th of March in past known years.

#1: If he does not over incubate it during the day, and it does not freeze overnight, it may even remain viable, who knows?

#2: I wonder about this possibility, and also fear that if this chick hatches it may not survive unless both parents care for it. Tough situation.

Institute for Wildlife Studies Mod
I'm sure they would take care of it if a chick were to hatch, but there was not a full clutch laid so the female is not driven to incubate until there is a full clutch.

The following is what I directly asked and his reply is below:

Followers of this nest the world over are curious as to why a full clutch has not been laid. And many (myself included) are filling in the blanks ... right or wrong or no idea. There does not appear to be a bond between the 2 as in years past. Although we only see their behaviors that happen immediately in the vicinity of the egg as the cam is focused there for the purpose of seeing the egg or the laying of the next. To me he seems leery of her, but does act as if this is his nest. For that reason, I have thought this may be a new female that displaced his mate after she laid this egg. What are your thoughts on why there is only 1 egg?

Institute for Wildlife Studies Mod
It is impossible to say from only watching 10 square feet of their territory via the cam. It could have been an accidental egg that was laid and the real clutch will come around their normal time, the female could have been displaced after the first egg, the male could have been displaced after the first egg, both could have been displaced after the first egg, ...

Have kept cam up here. No doubt in my mind that egg belongs to this male, and that this is a new female.Male would not be incubating if it was not his.

Experts will never come out and state what they cannot see directly , but a lot of us have seen this same scenario, at other sites over the years, .

It is a story in progress

I agree bev. The female that laid this egg is not the one that is visiting in the last week. New female, same male. He will keep on trying to care for the egg. We all remember Gulf Tower Pittsburgh 2010 when Dori ousted Tasha after 2 eggs were laid. Dori added 3 of her own, Louie cared for the first 2 during courtship and all 5 hatched.

I'm with bev 100%
I've seen Newman at GSB mate with any female who came by.
That's Hoppy's egg. Lena will lay when she's good n ready

Hope at Cathedral had this scenario.
Terzio raised her first 3 and his one
