Concerned about potential for plane strikes, Westover Air Reserve Base removes peregrine falcon chicks
This week the chicks reached two weeks old and state experts climbed up to the ceiling of the hangar, plucked the chicks from the nest and carefully placed them in a box. The chicks will now be relocated to other nests in the state to be taken care of by different parents. Research shows chicks do not form deep bonds with their parents and other birds will nurture them, Koziol said.

That's relatively close to the Boston nest we watch...it would have to cross the Charles to get to the area they described...hmmmmmmmmm...its banded, so ya never know. I know the Boston trio was banded...just don't know their numbers.

:dancegirl: "In the News" from 50 years ago! https://www.thegleaner.com/story/news/2 ... 681496002/ Enlarge the photo and look @ that 11 year old girl standing in the background to the right of the elephant, in the short sleeve, white, shirt with her arms crossed. Golly she's barefoot and her brother is in the hospital and her parents don't know she is standing next to an elephant along side the Ohio river!! Good thing the local newspaper chose to publish the elephant with the VIP"S atop him back in June 1968 and not this photo!! I know for a fact she got to ride this elephant and hold the hose to help wash him both days he was there. And she was absolutely "over the moon" in love with this wonderful creature!! :5val:

Thanks for sharing that article, SGB. I did not understand the illustration at all. I will look for the complete article in the Yellowstone edition.

Also not mentioned are names of the invasive species. In Indiana, Zebra mussels have invaded our waterways, lakes, and ponds. They are awful clogging up everything.

The invasive species is the Lake Trout, which is wiping out the cutthroat trout. Lake Trout swim deeper, out of the reach of raptors/otters/bears. Eagles and Osprey rely on the abundance of Cutthroat trout...and since their numbers have drastically reduced, the osprey are leaving (only 3 nests in 2017) and the eagles are preying on other bird populations, reducing their numbers. Bears have increased their diet of elk calves since not enough cutthroat trout to feed their cubs.

I think the "iconic birds" they are referring to are the loons, trumpeter swans, osprey, etc.

Its all quite disturbing...and all because of 1 fish that does not belong there.

reember Polly. roger and spirits daughter.

so glad she is still nesting and carrying on a great legacy. she had a wonky leg when sh e fledged and the adults helped her all winter and she stayed during nesting. that is why I never underestimate these raptors.

thanks for bringing this over. just had time now to read

Good news falcon followers, Brad the Grand Forks peregrine chick is flying
"Brad," the peregrine falcon chick hatched this spring atop the UND water tower and banded in late June, is flying and has completed his maiden flights without incident.

Local birding expert Dave Lambeth has seen the peregrine chick on Hyslop Sports Center, and regional raptor authority Tim Driscoll said he saw Brad flying near Hyslop on Monday.

The successful flights bode well for the young peregrine to survive an especially risky time in his life, Driscoll said.

"That is really good news because he's been up and back, and both adults are attentive," Driscoll said. "I think the worst is over. Let's hope for good things."

Driscoll banded the peregrine chick in late June, dubbing him "Brad" after Herald Outdoors writer Brad Dokken, who has covered the Grand Forks peregrines for the past decade.

Can you imagine what our world would be like if none of the ancient birds had survived the asteroid strike that finished all their relatives?
