Looks like we are going to loose Bay State Milling Cam
Unfortunately, the nest box is a safety hazard and needs to be removed. We are hopeful that the falcons will
return to Castle Rock, located roughly a mile upstream in on the Wisconsin side of the river. Two of the eyasses
this year were named after Rick and Maggie Lubinski, the father/daughter team who got a nest box installed
here as part of a 4H project in 2001. To read more about how the box was originally installed, follow this link:
http://www.winonapost.com/archive/03070 ... 30701.html
BUT we might be getting a cam at
Rob’s Nestbox, Greysolon Plaza, Duluth MN
We returned later in the summer to replace the old camera and microphone. Since falcon Dani had fledged, the
normally extremely aggressive female didn’t come near us – a relief since we hadn’t brought anything to capture
her with! It was interesting to see just how different her behavior was. The new equipment is great and we are
hoping to have it live on the internet later this year. It seems like a fitting tribute to Rob, who did so much of our
early camera work.

Emaciated young falcon rescued from Blue Bridge in Grand Rapids
Gorgeous pictures here:

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A young and emaciated peregrine falcon was among the visitors to the Blue Bridge during the first night of ArtPrize in Grand Rapids.
Two Grand Rapids Police officers on patrol waited almost an hour and a half with the bird on Wednesday, Sept. 24, while wildlife rehab workers responded to retrieve it.
A couple caught the falcon in a hat and flagged down police shortly before 9 p.m. after noticing teenagers trying to harm it on the bridge. The bird then flew a short distance, the police officers said. The officers said the falcon was docile and didn't mind being touched.
The falcon was sleeping soundly, aside from moving once when it was scared by a dog, when Peg and Roger Markle of Wildlife Rehab Center in Grand Rapids arrived.
Peg Markle said the bird was born in the spring but is small and appeared starved, as it likely wasn't a good hunter when it left the nest. The pair planned to do a physical examination and then take the bird to Braveheart Raptor Rehabilitation Center in Muskegon County. The center rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned raptors, then returns them to the wild when they're healthy, according to a mission posted on its Facebook page.
Many peregrine falcons in the area are banded and tracked by a Department of Natural Resources marine biologist, said Peg Markle, who wasn't able to get a good look Wednesday at whether the rescued bird had been banded.
In June, a marine biologist banded two baby peregrine falcons atop the Kent County Courthouse, which is one of five active nests in West Michigan.

Stranded peregrine falcon rescue
The bird was trapped in a slot canyon that, at its base, was only two feet wide. Even if the falcon had been old enough to fly, the canyon wasn’t wide enough to accommodate the bird’s wingspan. The young peregrine was still in the branching stage — when young fledglings spend a lot of time going from branch to branch before they launch into flying. Totally confused, the bird had no idea what to do and couldn’t escape the canyon without help.

"With Beak and Claw"

This film was produced in 2001, but only very recently submitted to YouTube.

The film is dedicated to 250 million birds dying from hunting annually during their migration in the Mediterranean Region.

"With Beak and Claw" is a film created by the Polish cinematographer Krystian Matysek. The filming was carried out over three years and managed to capture on tape the unique scenes from the life of birds and other animals of the Polish Northeast - among others: the fighting of ravens and buzzards, hunting of a golden eagle, bald eagle’s attack on the colony of cormorants and black grouse and cranes’ mating dances.
The beauty of scenes showing the effect of atmospheric phenomena on nature was managed exceptionally well. This film presents a remarkable vision that goes far beyond the standard realization of classic nature films. The author of the film, to avoid brazen didactic instruction, completely abandoned the verbal commentary. Emotions of the viewer are directly influenced by the stunning images and captivating soundtrack of the film. Unfolding of the "With Beak and Claw" is conducted in an evocative manner: film consists of separate scenes creating dramatic total effect. The tension fluctuates like in a thriller - next to violent scenes of battles and hunting scenes are moody passages devoted to, for example, rearing of the young. (Translation of the description on YouTube)

Well now I know why I couldn't find any young ones. This is about 25 miles up from me.

Society pushes for peregrine falcon protection

"This year there weren't any chicks but we are hoping in the coming years more birds will chose this a potential nesting site," he said.
