This sounds like they better start looking into the fish or water being the problem

Center sees surge in osprey rescues
BY TIMOTHY O'HARA Citizen Staff
tohara@keysnews.com
The Key West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center has been inundated with a rash of sick ospreys during the past three weeks.

The center is treating four ospreys that were recently rescued from the Lower Keys, said Peggy Coontz, the center’s animal care director. Another died shortly after arriving at the center, Coontz said.

It’s rare to have one of the Florida Keys’ top predators at the center, let alone four at the same time. Coontz and center Executive Director Tom Sweets are baffled by the surge in sick ospreys.

All of their symptoms seem to be the same: The birds were lethargic and emaciated when they were rescued and were visibly shaking at times, Coontz said.

Marathon-based veterinarian Dr. Doug Mader took blood from the birds and is having it analyzed to determine the cause of their ailments.

All four of the birds are recovering but are still weeks away from being released back into the wild, Coontz said.

The Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife, a bird rescue facility in Sanibel, Florida, is also seeing a surge in osprey rescues and rehabilitations, Coontz said.

The ospreys, also known as fish hawks, are one of the Keys’ top bird predators and expert hunters that feed solely on fish they pluck from the near shore waters.

The osprey is listed as a Species of Special Concern only in Monroe County. Permits are required throughout the state to remove a nest for these raptors, and a replacement structure must be erected to mitigate the removal of the nest.

I posted a couple times about this beautiful lady, it is just so sad, but if she would have been in pain this is for the best. Teton wouldn't have given up if they had thought there was a chance. :sorrow:

Idaho Bald Eagle With Prosthetic Beak Featured On National Geographic Channel
Image
Raptor biologist Janie Veltkamp met Beauty in 2007. Beauty is a 14-year-old bald eagle, and back then the bird was struggling to survive. She had been illegally shot in the wild, and lost her upper beak from the trauma. Without her upper beak – which is vital to eating – she wasn’t expected to live very long.

But Veltkamp – who is the founder and director of Birds of Prey Northwest in northern Idaho – had an idea. The former nurse wondered if creating and attaching a prosthetic beak could help Beauty.

A year and a half later, a team attached the first 3D-printed prosthetic beak to Beauty's head. Veltkamp says the bird’s unique temperament helped a lot.

“Bald eagles in captivity can be quite nervous and high strung," she says. "Beauty has a very calm temperament for such a bird and it’s one of the reasons I decided to take on her case. It’s not very scientific but she seems to have a sense that we’re trying to help her.”

The biologist says Beauty is not just a good test subject. Veltkamp says the bird is an example of the dangers posed by illegal poachers on bald eagles. Although her prosthetic beak helps her feed and take care of herself, Beauty will never be able to live in the wild.

Now, more people will get the chance to hear Beauty’s story. The bird will be featured in an episode of "Unlikely Animal Friends" on the National Geographic channel April 30.

If any of you remember the shooting of Haya and her daughter Marina in Oakland 5 years ago, they have brought charges against the shooter:

MAN CHARGED WITH KILLING BIRDS: A man has been charged in federal court with killing six migratory birds, court records show.

Oliver M. Henderson was charged in U.S. District Court in Oakland with six misdemeanor counts of taking, killing and possessing a migratory bird.

He was named in a court document known as an information, which in federal court typically signifies that a defendant intends to plead guilty to at least one count.

The court papers accused Henderson of killing a Peregrine falcon in June 2011, a Cooper's hawk and a sharp-shinned hawk in July 2011, a bird of unknown species sometime in 2011 or 2012, another sharp-shinned hawk in January 2012 and a sixth unknown bird in December 2014.

The prosecution was the result of an investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Peregrine falcons find home inside Erie shipyard building

"What's really unique about Erie is their nest is inside a building,'' she said. "It's sheltered and they aren't exposed to the wind and rain, and it's probably an appealing nature to them.''

More here,
