Bald Eagle Receiving Treatment for Severe Injuries
PENDER COUNTY – A bald eagle is being treated at the Cape Fear Raptor Center after being shot several times.

The creature, which is covered under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, was found in Pamlico County. Penalties for injuring or taking a bald eagle can include a $100,000 fine and a year in prison.

With multiple wounds to its wing, the eagle underwent four hours of surgery to place six pins in the wing after.

"More than likely he had 20 to 30 shots go through his wing to injure him so badly," said Dr. Joni Seymour, a veterinarian for Cape Fear Raptor Center.

Officials do not know who shot the bird, but Public Information Officer Lt. Sam Craft said it is unlikely the person who did the shooting did it by accident.

"It's not a mistaken identity with a bald eagle,” Craft said. “They are very large birds. Whoever did this was intentionally trying to kill an animal that the law did not allow for them to take."

Caring for the bird is expected to be costly.

"Once we keep him for 180 days to get released, we probably have about $7,000 to $8,000, even $10,000 worth of money invested in him," Seymour said.

She speculated it would take six months before the eagle is able to fly again, and, even then, there is no guarantee it will be able to return to its original home.

"This bird is going to have a tough time reestablishing his territory,” Seymour said. “He probably won’t be able to do that

I am so darn PO'd right now, I just want to go out there and slap the sh*t out of the Fish & Wildlife guys

Teen faces charges in killing of bald eagle

Delgado told deputies that the initial shot didn't kill the bird, so he shot it several more times.
:furious: :furious: :furious:
Because of Delgado’s age, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declined to prosecute, but game warden H.R. Volschenk of Texas Parks and Wildlife said Delgado would be charged with hunting without a landowner's consent, a class A misdemeanor.

This was at the discretion of US Fish and Wildlife. At least the local game warden game of Texas Parks and Wildlife leveled a minor charge, "hunting without a landowner's consent, a class A misdemeanor". They could have locked him up, but chose not to. I am baffled.

I saw this and thought good they caught him maybe something will happen to this idiot

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa DNR says it’s found the man who took the talons from a dead bald eagle at a Polk County Park but they’re still looking for the person who killed the bird.

The decapitated and mutilated eagle was found on January 25th by hikers at Yellow Banks County Park east of Des Moines. The DNR says the bird was shot and killed.

The DNR says it has found the man who has possession of the eagle’s talons. 27-year old Mitchell Hoyt of Runnells was cited for illegal possession of a protected nongame animal earlier this month. However, authorities don’t believe that Hoyt killed the eagle.

Bald eagles are protected by state and federal laws. There is no eagle hunting season and it is never legal to kill one.
=========================
Then I saw this.
Well just another piece of sh*t that got away with a horrendous crime against the Bald Eagle

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is searching for a person believed to have the talons of a bald eagle that was shot and killed last month.

The DNR issued this statement:

The search continues for the party responsible for the death of a bald eagle discovered Jan. 25, in Yellow Banks County Park, on the southeast side of Des Moines.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources believe the eagle was killed sometime around the first week of January. The condition of the eagle’s remains made it difficult to place the exact time and manner of death, but damage to its legs are consistent from being shot with bird shot.

“We received a lot of good information from the public, including information that led us to an individual who was in possession of bald eagle talons that we believe came from the Yellow Banks eagle, but we have not found the individual responsible for the raptor’s death,” said Nate Anderson, state conservation officer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Anderson issued a citation for illegal possession of a protected nongame animal to Mitchell Hoyt, 27, from Runnells, on Feb. 4. Hoyt pleaded guilty in Polk County Court and paid $195 fine on Feb. 22.

“We continue to follow leads wherever they take us and hopefully we will catch the individual or individuals responsible for this,” Anderson said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to use the Turn in Poachers website at http://www.iowadnr.gov/tip or by calling the hotline at 1-800-532-2020. Information can be left anonymously.

Bald eagles are a state and federally protected species.
