"In the News" from 50 years ago! https://www.thegleaner.com/story/news/2 ... 681496002/ Enlarge the photo and look @ that 11 year old girl standing in the background to the right of the elephant, in the short sleeve, white, shirt with her arms crossed. Golly she's barefoot and her brother is in the hospital and her parents don't know she is standing next to an elephant along side the Ohio river!! Good thing the local newspaper chose to publish the elephant with the VIP"S atop him back in June 1968 and not this photo!! I know for a fact she got to ride this elephant and hold the hose to help wash him both days he was there. And she was absolutely "over the moon" in love with this wonderful creature!! |

Thanks for sharing that article, SGB. I did not understand the illustration at all. I will look for the complete article in the Yellowstone edition. Also not mentioned are names of the invasive species. In Indiana, Zebra mussels have invaded our waterways, lakes, and ponds. They are awful clogging up everything. |

The invasive species is the Lake Trout, which is wiping out the cutthroat trout. Lake Trout swim deeper, out of the reach of raptors/otters/bears. Eagles and Osprey rely on the abundance of Cutthroat trout...and since their numbers have drastically reduced, the osprey are leaving (only 3 nests in 2017) and the eagles are preying on other bird populations, reducing their numbers. Bears have increased their diet of elk calves since not enough cutthroat trout to feed their cubs. I think the "iconic birds" they are referring to are the loons, trumpeter swans, osprey, etc. Its all quite disturbing...and all because of 1 fish that does not belong there. |
