Alison posted this over on the Cleveland forum...some very sad news..

Very sad news from Winnipeg; Vesper, one of the 2009 juvies and the only female, has been killed in a collision with a plane at San Antonio International Airport.

From the Winnipeg site:

Hate to start off the 2011 Radisson with sad news but we have had a report from the/a state biologist in Texas that one of our Radisson chicks was struck and killed by an aircraft at San Antonio International Airport in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, January 18th. The band number confirms that the bird that died was Vesper from the 2009 wild-hatch at the Radisson Hotel. And the last female chick hatched to Trey and Princess.

Her siblings:

2004 - Infinity (f unknown), Alley (f nesting in Lincoln, Nebraska) & an unnamed male sibling

2005 - Ivy (m nesting at the Radisson), Lucy (f unknown but did nest once unsuccessfully in West Winnipeg) & an unnamed male sibling

2006 - The Little Daredevil (m died at fledging), Bandit (m unknown), Radisson (f nesting in Edmonton, Alberta)

2007 - Hurricane (f nesting in Brandon), Chinook (m unknown), Mistral (f unknown), Taku (f died before fledging)

2008 - The Lost Chicks (died before fledging)

2009 - Ty (m observed at the Radisson Oct 2010), Tupper (m unknown), Vesper (f died in San Antonio, Texas 2011)

It is especially sad, since Vesper made it through the critical first year and beyond, so she was obviously doing very well. She was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This deeply saddens me. I remeber Vesper well. the year of the tupperware box. Vesper was so vocal and quite the gal.

but on the bright side. We at least know the young falcons are successfully migrating through their first year. We do not hear of our Edmonton young ones.

I am so sorry to hear about little Vesper. I watched this nest very closely that year, such a sweetie. You just can't believe that they hit planes, but it's happened before, at one of the Canadian nests too I think.

Good memory ljames! We lost all three boys 2 years ago at the Toronto Residential Site - all at or around the airport.

OH wow...I had totally forgotten about that tragedy, Carly...

Here's irony for you...I saw a news segment (or was it a documentary) on an airport (or was it a waste receiving station...geeeeeeez...my memory) that was having problems with gulls. So, they hired a falconer and his falcon to clear the airport (?)throughout the day...

Falconers are hired quite often by the airports and waste sights.

I remember that Carly. Some people were quite cold about it also. Matthew was quite upset about their opinions.

Princess and Ivy have been spotted around this nest recently. They haven't chosen which one they will use yet.

This a pic of the McKenzie Seeds Building in Brandon, Manitoba, two hours west of Winnipeg. I used to work here until they moved to a new location on one level. It is now a heritage site and being turned into apts and condos. Its about 13 stories to the top of the clock tower. The nest box is pretty much in the middle of the brick wall to the left of the clock tower.

Here is a copy of Carolyn's post in Breaking News:

The female is Hurricane, hatched 2007 on the Radisson Hotel in Wpg and the male is Brooklyn, hatched 2007 on the McKenzie building in Brandon. Hurricane laid her fourth egg on April 30th.

Post from Tracy today on the cam forum...
A few dates to help folks get a sense of where we are in the nesting season
Manitoba Falcon Cam...

Mar 15 - Sandy from Fargo came to visit the nestbox
Mar 18 - Ivy returned to the Radisson territory
Mar 21 (estimated) - Princess returned and evicted Sandy from the nestbox
Apr 15 - first egg laid at the Radisson
Apr 17 - second egg laid at the Radisson
Apr 19 - third egg laid at the Radisson
Apr 20 - Princess and Ivy began incubating
Apr 22 - fourth egg confirmed at the Radisson

We estimate that hatching should begin about May 20th
We will set a banding date once all the eggs have hatched

Enjoy watching the CBC Manitoba Falcon Cam!
