I definitely saw two this am. Also saw Zephyr bring in prey, then took it out and was plucking it outside nest. He never brought it back in for her to feed. I was waiting and waiting.

Image Feel bad for him but he seems to be handling 1 talon just fine.

It was very touching to see Zephyr arrive with prey..I'm not exactly sure what happened, unless he thought he wasn't gonna be able to prepare it on the perch, and left to do it elsewhere...You could tell he was having some difficulty perching and holding onto the prey...Hope he comes back...

SOUTH BEND -- Two peregrine falcon eggs hatched this week atop County-City Building, and a third could be on its way.

The adult pair of falcons that live downtown had four eggs this year in their nesting box on the 14-story building.

Carol Riewe, a local naturalist and raptor rehabilitator who follows the birds, said one chick hatched Thursday morning and another hatched this morning.

A third egg was damaged, she said, and they're still waiting to see what happens with the fourth egg.

Zephyr, the adult male falcon, lost his right foot earlier this spring in an apparent trap injury. Riewe is concerned about whether he will be able to catch enough food to support Guinevere, the adult female, and two or three chicks.

"I'd be just as comfortable if a third chick doesn't hatch," Riewe said, "because it'd be one less mouth to feed under the circumstances."

She said raptors typically cache extra food in their nests for times when prey aren't available, but Zephyr and Guinevere don't appear to have any leftovers in their nesting box.

"Obviously," Riewe said, "things have been a little tough."

Watch live images of Zephyr, Guinevere and their chicks inside the nesting box at www.southbendin.gov/falcam.

Thanks for posting that article, Donna...I had no idea one of the eggs had been damaged...I guess time will tell if there will be a third hatch...

Maybe G and Z are gonna have to switch roles...Z can be Mr. Mom and G can "bring home the bacon"...or pigeon..whatever the case may be...

I'll give him credit, he's giving his best. Maybe 2 is enough this go round. The 2 are so cute, watched the feeding before.

Thanks for sharing the article. Was that in the SB Tribune? I am with Carol Riewe's position in hoping that the remaining egg does not hatch. I bet Zephyr has some pigeon stashed away from the actual nest. Kinney in Indianapolis has several spots on Market tower.
Oh my gosh, here he comes with dinner!!!

SGB, thank you so much for the pics of Zephyr, especially the ones of him bringing in prey and the food exchange. What a remarkable tiercel he is!

I'm curious about the statement that one of the eggs is damaged - I thought there seemed to be a pip in a third egg, but it's hard to see.

Thanks for the link Alison.

A question I have about her comments is that she cites a lack of food stash in the nest. I would think he would stash it nearby but somewhere else.
Anyone else have thoughts on that?? :think

I think you are absolutely right, Gigi. Usually there will be a food cache nearby, but not in the nest. Extra food or leftovers would normally be taken out of the nest, in order not to attract predators.
