Providing the following Google-generated satellite pic to help put cam view locations in perspective for those not familiar with downtown Richmond:

Thanks richmondMIke.

It is always helpful when they are fledging to see the area.

That's a great overhead map, Mike...I hope you don't mind, I'm gonna copy it and put it in a permanent spot....cause, I'm sure we're gonna need it again in the future...

Excellent idea on the pics SGB, so here's another that I had if you want to consider a closer view too:

Turned into a front-end brake job! Sorry to have been unable to make it there today. Any movement?

SGB, I chuckled and loved your gif of Ginger where it looks like she's calling, "mom, mom, MOM!" Glad she is not rushing things. She will go when she is ready. I know how hard it is for the ground observers, though.

you are always on pins and needles when observing from the ground.

last year I started our fledge watch day 37 and first one fledged day 42 and then 43 and 44.

Year before, the males all fledged prematurely. But my motto is ,be prepared.

With Ginger, she has not got to know area yet , so good for her to take her time and get to see the big world of the roof, first.

As long as she is flapping she should be strong

I'm relieved to hear that Ginger is still there and getting the lay of the land before she takes her first flight . . . but I hope she doesn't wait too long, especially with all the dedicated fledge watchers currently on duty to see that she remains safe when she takes off into the sky.

P.S. I was pleased to see the photos of the building and the annotated photo of the downtown area near the nest box. That really helps us cam watchers get oriented to the falcons' home territory.

Today at fledge watch we had DGIF biologists at the site at 5:30....Sergio and Ray. My rehab friends, other DGIF biologists ( including Steve) and Rex Springston from the Richmond Times Dispatch and his wife came in for the morning shift. Ginger was getting fed and fat and happy. It was a pretty and windy day up high. Ernie, one of the biologists, spent the day on top of the Dominion building getting windburn. These perfect flying conditions did not even remotely want to make our little buddha girl move and flap her wings. Harriet and Ozzie took turns watching over her (right over her), and many times both were on either side. Talk about a spoiled girl! Several times they would fly up and make circles around her to try and get her moving, which had no affect. Mom shared a meal with her in the afternoon, then should took a siesta on the ledge for several hours.

Bev, she is 49 days! Its unbelievable! She has absolutely no inclination to leave the comforts of home, and no siblings to go first!

Rex is writing yet another story for the paper about how she hasn't flown. His photographer came down for an hour and had virtually no shot opportunities.

Tomorrow some Audubon volunteers will be there in the morning, and my husband and I in the afternoon. Emergency plans have been put in place in case she gets into trouble.

Tomorrow is another day :suncon:

Thanks for the great commentary today, everyone. RichmondMike, thanks for the maps showing us where everything is.

SGB, I loved your gif of Ginger.

Thanks for the report, Barb! This situation is very puzzling to me, although I guess it should be since I'm certainly not an expert. I'll have to ask Jane & Reenie if they remember how old Red Girl was when she finally fledged--it took her a while & she did have sisters to go flying with! I guess she will go when she's good & ready!

I think it is a bit different here becasue she has been in that enclosure. If there had been a sibling ,they might have both been gone by now. I do not think there is any reason to worry, she is just getting a lay of the land.
I knwo it is hard on the watchers but she will go when she is ready.

good luck to you all and do not get sunburnt.

It seemed to me that she still had a lot of white on Thursday. She really didn't look quite ready to fly.

Taking a break from yard work...and happy to see they are panning..Does that mean little Ginger has fledged?

Bummer...back to the ledge view..Does that mean she's somewhere in that direction?

While I was running all around looking for her on the ground, Wayne saw her flap up for a flash. She must be back to her nap now. No sign of the parents on any of their favorite perches.
