Well, she finally got up the nerve to hop to the outer perch (not in the recording...and it was a tad awkward..)

Getting back into the box was even MORE awkward...

Got this in my e-mail I like the wording about the little sweetie that didn't make it :cryinggirl:
Early yesterday afternoon (6/20), our male falcon chick (Zephyr) left the nest box. He spent the afternoon running around the Westar building ledge. Late in the evening he flew off the building and has been testing his wings around downtown Topeka. He was spotted this morning around Kansas Avenue. The female falcon chick (Stormy) looks like she could leave the nest box any second now. Mom and dad will continue to help feed the chicks and show them around until they are able to fend for themselves.

The winning falcon names are Stormy, Zephyr and Tesla.

The winning person that submitted the name Stormy, suggested that be the females name and we agree that is a great fit. We also feel that Zephyr is a good match for our younger male falcon who was first to fledge. And, Tesla, which is a reference to Nikola Tesla, an inventor and engineer of electricity is a good fit for our first hatched male that didn't make it and is now watching over his brother and sister.

Thank you to everyone that took the time to submit falcon names and for taking the time to vote for your favorite. We had over 130 votes. We'll continue to send out updates as long as our young falcons stick around downtown Topeka.

Thanks KF...I discovered yesterday that the fastest way to get a response from them is to post on the Westar Facebook Page...(go figure)...It will be interesting to see if that continues...

...and I agree...that is very sweet wording about the Tesla...the little lost chick...

A parent has been to the box 3 times in the past 30 minutes looking for the kids...they leave quickly as if they've spotted one of the kids...don't know if its the same parent or the same piece of food...I sure hope both kids are doing well...

I found out yesterday that they don't have an official fledge watch...just "lots of interested people" they watch out for the fledglings.. :suncrazy:

Update on the little chick that fell from the box...

We've received updated information on what happened to our oldest male chick that fell out of the nest box. The incident actually happened early in the morning on June 1, not the night before as we first believed. This is the report as viewed from the cam 1 security camera. An adult (pretty sure the female) landed on the box's perch with a bird to feed the chicks. While she was transferring it from her feet to her beak so she could hop into the nest box, the hungry baby hopped up close to the edge of the box. The male flew by as the female was trying to transfer the bird. The chick hopped to the box's lip to get closer to the food and lost its balance. The female hopped into the box as the chick lost its grip and fell. When the chicks leave this year, we'll make modifications to the box to make it tougher for this to happen in the future.

Great pics, SGB! What a sad update on what happened to little Tesla, which could have been avoided. Perhaps they will turn the double perch outside the box into a solid platform with a raised edge all around it, or something similar, for next year.

AFter a rest on the perch, Zephyr decides to get some exercise

Stormy napped in the box for a while, then decided to go up to the top of the box...where she started goofing around...

I do hope she is ok...

Almost immediately, someone returned to the top of the box, Followed by Nemaha..who went into the box and finished up the leftovers..

I would post pics, but PB is acting up now...
