Lots of drama going on at the Fruitvale Bridge (Hiko & Haya's nest).

Specifically when Haya went missing is in question. Someone believes they saw her on 5/31 feeding a juvie (Haya is not banded, Hiko is banded). The next day, apparently an unbanded falcon (female) was picked up or transported to a local wildlife rescue/rehab from an area that Haya hunts. There's been lots of back and forth between a few forum members about whether or not an unbanded falcon can be positively id'd, specifically this one.

The falcon at the rehab location has not been photographed and is in quiet isolation, recovering from surgery. Apparently the outlook is postive, but it's early in recovery. Once the falcon is a little better, identification will be attempted to see if this is/maybe Haya.

If the falcon recovers, Glenn Stewart with SCPBRG will band the bird. I don't know from the emails I've read on the forum who will release, or where, I think someone mentioned it will most likely be released where it was picked up. Glenn figures once the bird is back in the air, we will see what it does. I guess if it's Haya she'll return to her territory/bridge.

Today, there was a post by Lori Michel on Yahoo forums. Here's what she observed yesterday evening (6/9):

I spent the evening observing the PEFAs at FB and saw 4 of them. Initially, only the adult Female was there, tucked under the Alameda machine room on a pipe that runs diagonally inside the tower opposite the side with the nest, she was wailing occasionally but I didn't see any other birds. She flew around the towers, landing in the nest area and checked out the nest for a while...She flew off towards the Park St bridge and was hunting and gone for a while...when she returned, she had a wailing juvie on her tail, and between the juvie screaming and her cacking, it was pretty loud. The juvie kept swooping under her to take the prey but she didn't transfer it and instead landed on top of the Alameda tower where the juvie followed her. They were both on the tower and it was quiet for about 10 minutes where I could see feathers floating down but couldn't see the birds. The juvie flew from the Alameda tower to the Oakland tower and quietly sat next to the pistons in the shade--she appeared to have eaten as her crop was showing but I didn't see the action on top of the tower so can't be sure that the meal came from the new Falcon.

A little while later, Hiko came in with prey and suddenly there were 4 Falcons in the air, lots of wailing, cacking and echupping happened and 51R (Fern) took the exchange from Hiko's beak and landed on the bottom of the chain on the Alameda tower to eat--she was very low on the bridge and I was able to easily read her band. Meanwhile, Hiko and the Falcon were dive bombing each other and I lost sight of the 4th bird while I watched them perform some aerial combat---serious threatening behavior but no contact. The Falcon flew off towards the High St bridge and Hiko returned to the railing on the Alameda tower where I was able to read his band. With all the activity, I was not able to get a band reading or a close visual on the 4th falcon but I think its safe to assume it was Marina. After a while Hiko went to the east hunting and for a time there were no birds on the bridge. The Falcon returned in his absence and again roosted on the pipe in the Alameda tower. Hiko came back with small prey and he flew around the two towers with it for a while but no juvies came out to meet him and the Falcon in the Tower wailed as he passed. He eventually landed on the Alameda platform under the railing and ate some of the prey. About 7:45pm he flew due east with the prey remains and didn't return. When I left at 8:30, only the Falcon remained on the pipe....Very interesting to observe.....

Interesting to see what will happen. I'm glad the girls seem to be doing well. Obviously Hiko is caring for them. I'm glad the new falcon was not aggressive towards the juvies.

Oh, Michelle, I do hope the falcon in rehab is Haya & that she will be OK & join Hiko when she is released. :clapegg: It sounds like the girls are doing very well, & since Hiko didn't share the prey with Marina, he doesn't appear to be interested in her.

Terrible Disgusting news from the Fruitvale Bridge...

Sometimes I HATE PEOPLE.. And I unfortunately must say, gun fire in parts of Oakland is not uncommon. When people don't care about animals, much less fellow human beings, I shouldn't be surpised... And I don't think they will make any additional progress since they have problems getting information from witnesses of violent crimes since no one wants to say anything with the fear of retaliation.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, I apologize, but this just makes me sick.

Haya and her daughter, Marina, were shot by a person using a firearm during the week of June 6. Both are recuperating with broken wings (ulna bone) at the Alexander Lindsay Wildlife Museum hospital. Please don't call the hospital for updates. The ulna was pinned in both birds and they are making good progress. An investigation is underway by state and federal wildlife authorities and SCPBRG is offering a reward through the Department of Fish and Game CalTIP anonymous hotline for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators. An announcement about the reward will go to the media today to solicit tips to help law enforcement. The Fish and Game warden and Fish and Wildlife Service agent have made good progress on the case but need additional information from anyone who can provide evidence helpful to the case. A firearm was discharged at least twice in the same neighborhood -- vicinity of Laguna and Alida streets in Oakland. One would think that someone must have heard or seen something? Several of the observation leaders and moderators from both the SF and SJ lists have committed to assisting with payment of the reward(s) if it comes to that and I am grateful for this help along with all the other help that they and you offer. Alexander Lindsay Jr. Museum in Walnut Creek is accepting donations in support of all the care they are providing for these birds. I'm sure you can appreciate that it was necessary to keep information about the incident from going public while law enforcement got an investigation underway. The warden called me late last night to say it was time to alert the press to the case and to get the CalTIP information 1-888-334-2258 to the public. Lisa Fernandez at the Mercury is working on a story now. The birds are receiving the best possible care at Alexander Lindsay and I know you join me in hope for their successful recovery. --glenn@scpbrg

I am so sorry Michelle. I understand how you feel & it really disgusts me that human beings can be so cruel. I hope both Haya and Marina make a full recovery & are released soon!

It is disgusting, and I'm sorry Michelle. I know this is your first and favorite nest. As a rehabber, I have transported an eagle, osprey and heron this year that have been shot. I can hardly stand it sometimes. It does sound like both of your girls are doing ok. I hope they find the creep that did this.

You all have said and typed everything I have been thinking since I read this terrible news but on the up side you now know where Haya is and it all sounds good and positive for her and Marina.
Now all we need is to find this cruel idiot and let Michelle have 15 minutes alone with him

I like the way you think, Kitten, to let Michelle have 15 minutes alone with the creep who did this.

Thanks for the links to the articles about the shooting, Kitten & Michelle.

I watched the video of Haya in rehab, & she's so beautiful it just brought tears to my eyes to see that a human's actions caused her pain...

Thanks for the information mwplay. How sickening that somebody has it in them to harm these beautiful birds. You think of all they go through just to survive and raise their young, then see something so needless like this happen to them too, it just makes you so sad and you have to wonder what kind of world is this? Such mean people. I hope they are caught. Now let me go and see if I can find that video.

I don't know where to post this stuff any more...

Now there's word, Fern - the 3rd chick, is missing. There was a report on 6/8 from someone who rides BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit ) who saw the two juvies with Hiko that morning, a few days after Haya went missing. They reported seeing the juvies occasionally flying low, at times 60-100ft, flying towards the Oakland Hills. According to the article, Marina was shot on 6/10.

Here's a video that was taken by someone who follows this group very closely. She obviously saw Fern on 6/6. Hiko was providing for his daughters after Haya was injured.

Hiko is becoming more interactive with Tremaine (the new female). Here's a video that was posted over the weekend.

AH.... Big Sigh Out.

What a shame.

:clapegg: Update on facebook :clapegg:

Update on peregrine falcons: we are happy to report that both Haya and Marina are doing well at our hospital and are both continuing to heal. Last week we were able to remove the bandages on their wings and they were moved to small outdoor aviaries. We want them to be able to stretch their wings but not fly yet as they are not ready for that. Though they have cleared this first hurdle they still have a long road ahead of them. Stay tuned for more updates!

I just went and looked on facebook and found this from August 1st

Peregrine Falcon Marina's first day in large aviary
Peregrine falcon update: Hospital staff are pleased to announce that Marina has ...taken the next step forward in her rehabilitation. Last week we test flew her in our 25-foot aviary and she was able to fly straight up from the ground to a swinging perch, as well as across the length of the aviary. It has been almost two months since she was able to fly so she is definitely out of shape! She has been moved to a large aviary where she can exercise her wings and where we can continue to monitor her.

Haya was radiographed again last week and the infection in her wing continues to heal. She is still on a twice-a-day antibiotic but she is continuing to do well. Both of these beautiful birds still have a very long road ahead of them but we are all hoping for the best.
