Great catch of Red Girl and CJ, Kim. Hope they're hunkered down somewhere safe for the night. And thanks for the hummer links, Ethel.

I had the cam up earlier but it doesn't seem to want to come up now. Our computers, etc. at work are still running so at least our building didn't lose power but it's possible the building that hosts the webcam did.

A cool story...
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/sciencefair/post/2011/08/bird-survive-rough-ride-through-hurricane-irene/1

Birds are so amazing! Chinquapin (chink a pin) is a Whimbrel with a radio transmitter that they've been monitoring to learn about the migratory paths of whimbrels. Here's an excerpt from the article...

"The scientists think Chinquapin found his way to some of the islands in the Caribbean to rest. "We think he's going to make it through the storm," Watts said.

What's truly surprising to Watts is that Chinquapin knew where to turn to find an island out in the middle of the ocean. "They seem to have this amazing ability to know exactly where they are at any time. We've had birds go 1,000 to 1,500 miles off shore of Bermuda and still be able to navigate effectively," he says."

How do they do that???

I REALLY DON'T THINK SOME PEOPLE GIVE BIRDS THE CREDIT OF BEING SO SMART. IF PEOPLE WOULD JUST WATCH THEM LIKE WE DO, THEY WOULD KNOW DIFFERENT! I WAS SO HOPING TO FIND SOMEONE IN THE BOX THIS MORNING. HOPE THEY GET POWER BACK SOON :-)

Glad you're OK this morning, Kim. No falcons around when I checked a bit ago. So far so good with the power in this part of PA.

All I can say is that it's good to be alive this morning, to be online, and to see the falcon cam up!

Last night was really scary with high winds, torrential rains, tornado warnings, and no power from 10:00 pm until 2:30 am. Fortunately, the only damage we got was some water seeping into the basement and garage. Neighbors across the street weren't so lucky though: a giant tree was uprooted and fell over onto their house, taking out about 2/3 of it. It looks like it will be a total loss.

OMG, Catbird! Your poor neighbors. Glad you are okay and with only minor damage. Kim, good to see you online, too.

Amazing story Kim! We did fairly well. Had the same power outage as Catbird. Our yard is a mess, but too windy today with the back lash, to clean it up. Tomorrow is the day. Many without power still. My son and the Shop don't have it. Our birdies at the feeders are clinging to eat. Took the feeders down last night. Brought them out early this morning and the birds were there imediately. Thanks for the Hummer link. Awesome! We have many Goldfinch eating at the Cone Flowers today.

I'm glad you're all okay today. Catbird, we had some water seepage too, but were able to keep it under control through the night. That's a shame about your neighbor's house. I worry about that sort of thing happening everytime we have a storm like this.

One of them was just in the box. I think it was RG but not positive.

I believe CJ was just in the box. Maybe they'll both get in there at some point so we'll know for sure. :)

Congratulations on getting your power back, Kim!

I'm having absolutely no luck in finding either CJ or RG at home lately. This morning from 6:45 to 7:30 (before I started cleaning up storm debris), I had the cam up and saw no one . . . but then I'd left once for less than 5 minutes to get more coffee.
:gaaaaah: I swear the falcons know when I'll be away from my computer and choose that time to make an appearance!

This is the first time I mentioned someone in the box at around 6:15. The more I look at it the more I think it's CJ and not RG.
Image

This is from 7:10 and it's more CJ's scraping style than RG's and it's definitely his eye.

Great catch, Kim! I agree that it is CJ in the box. I don't see a red band on a leg & when he's in the scrape, I think it looks like him, too. As deep as that scrape is getting, he must be trying to dig to China! Maybe he thinks he'll be more comfortable on 5 eggs next season if the scrape is deeper! :flirty:
