Good to hear nothing was broken. It makes me wonder, though, about all the puncture wounds. Wouldn't there be a risk of infection?

Poor Dad. I hate it when they get into a fight like that.

I wonder if they gave him an antibiotic shot of something just in case. He has a long journey to make pretty soon too.

Edit: Would it have been one of the males at Bell tower or Weber that he fought with?

Thanks for sharing Gord's email, Bev....wow....a little more than a bump on the head...poor dad...I'm glad Gord is taking care of him...but that's a good question, Susan..I'm guessing Gord knows all the tricks for making sure no infection gets the chance to take hold...

Glad you're taking some time for yourself, Bev...hectic season over there..clinical, weber, Bell, AND Genesee!!! I guess having so many nests within driving distance is both a blessing and a curse!!!

Clincial

When I e-mailed Gord last night, I asked him about antibiotics. I am sure Gord will do what he has to.

As I said as, much as I want dad there soon I would rather he be kept till he is in top shape. Because he has a long journey ahead of him mid Sept and because the kids will chase after him for food, and i do not want him taxing himself.
Betweeen Gord and Radisson , I think the kids will be fine.
I had a note from a watcher this morning and she said she saw an in air food exchange when she was riding her bike. so mom has taken on the training.

I still have to find out exactly where dad was found downtown, but i would think male from Bell. Weber is in other direction. the only other thing I can think of is a male has come to the bridge site and dad has been used to wandering there as there has been no male since he left there.

My thought is that maybe a kid wandered into the air space and dad was defending, as Dad knows what space is off limits. He was born downtown and has been on the other side of river for years.

When I talk face to face with Gord , I will know more.

In meantime we will monitor as best as we can both sites. We are going to Weber first in a few minutes , on our way to meet family for early supper. then after supper we will go the university. That way we can see who returns home, and if they are feeding.

Monitoring 4 sites , this year has been hard and next year I cannot do 4. But we can usually do Weber and University and fit it into our schedule.

In any case, I feel positive at this point and am always praying for all our birds. S2 included.

Have a good day everyone. I am going to water my plants. Even with all the rain , they dry out quickly.

WEber

When I was at Weber Wednesday night , we had all kids in site and I believe both adults. I was there for a wine tasting fundraiser for our Weber birds. The people at the wine store have adopted our ones there. They raised $1000.00 , It was great fun and Gord donated 2 pictures to be auctioned off. My friend won the bid on one of them and presented it to me. I was just thrilled.
I will take a picutre of it and post it.

I willlet you know what we see today but so far the kids have been staying high and flying great. Window washers will be there next week so that should be interesting. Gord figures it will be O.K. We will see.

Thanks for all the information bev., you're the best. :superstar:
What a wonderful thing that the people at the wine store have taken such an interest in the falcons and so nice of your friend to give the picture to you. :dancegirl:

looking at my pictures, I could be wrong. It is probably 2 adults on C and N and kid on ledge. but we have 5 and that is important thing. I am usually good with this but as I said some parts failing me. :girlyes: :girlyes:

Clinical science,

Have gone down every day but yesterday.

Always see at least 2 kids . We know we always see yellow and we saw red for sure on Sunday and Peter thinks it was blue on Monday and we are not sure who other was on Tuesday.

Mom is acting much different without dad. We are making sure no other male comes in. Not that we are sitting there with slingshot :girlcrazy: but we are trying to really watch, so that when our male is better, Gord knows who is around.
Gord is out pf town, till Weekend . I believe he is monitoring Pembina River, so do not know much more about our male. I am figuring Gord has him with falconer while he is gone. This is really the best for our falcons. Not sure but just guessing.

Peter and I would love to go to Pembina to see the young falcons , but we are monitoring U of A.

I too had to chuckle at you keeping other males away from Clinical Science. I can picture you running & flapping your arms to scare them away, Bev! :hahah :thumbup

Thanks for posting those great pictures of the falcon family even with a hurt hand. Take care of yourself now!

clinical science

Well this has not been an easy year, and it look like it will continue to have twists and turns.

As you know, Mondays August 15,2011 our dad was injured downtown Edmonton. He was found at Grant Machewan, which is not far from Bell Tower. Luckily he was found just after injury, as he was on campus MOnday at noon. I noticed he did not turn in Monday night.
Gord was told he had a bad bump, but not so. Our male was very bad off. Gord did not know if he would make it. He was very sore and had feathers off his face and neck and lots of talon wounds. He had tangled with another peregrine and probably our downtown male. What led him there , we will never know ,as he was born downtown and knows this is off limits.

He had septicemia and was very underweight. Gord started him on antibiotics and then got him eating and so now 3 weeks later, tomorrow ,he is on the way to recovery. He is eating well and flapping good. No broken bones. But at first he could not lift one wing as high as the other.

But we have a big problem, In his absence a new male has come in. Even as I hissed at him, he did not listen :tantrum2:
Tuesday, August 16 to Monday, August 22, everything seemed fine. I saw mom , hunting until Saturday and then the kids were eating other things also, that were provided. On Monday and Tuesday (august 21 and 22nd) mom was scarce, but we did think we saw here flying high with a falcon on the Monday night and we just assumed , another kid. We were not there on Wednesday but Becky said she saw 2 kids.

Thursday , August 25th, we saw Radisson on med science building and another peregrine flew in , onto north west corner of Newton apartments. In my head I knew this was probably an adult ,but in my heart I was hoping it was Yellow. We thought it was maybe the light, and that hopefully we were seeing a kid. The other peregrine flew off north and RAdisson went to top of college plaza and ate some prey there. There again, my head told me this was strange. We saw 2 tucked in that night and thought one was mom and one was Yellow, as he had been tucking in where dad used to tuck in before he got hurt.

Friday , august 26, we just saw RAdisson on Ed building and then she flew over to Suite Hotel and was down on a ledge. I said to Peter, what if there is another male and he has dropped her off some food as a gift there.

Saturday August 27th , we saw RAdisson on tower of Dentistry bundling, and we could not stay long.

MOnday, August,29th, I had an e-mail from Jean. She said on Sunday night she an adult buzzing a kid on clinical science. She sent me the picutres, and i knew this adult was not mom. She said lots of noise. When the kidthought the adult had taken off ,it tried to go to Maz and was chased and then it flew over to college plaza and the adult chased it and then she lost sight. At first she thought maybe they were playing but then realized this was not the case.

MOnday morning she saw an adult buzz the clinical science a few times but saw no other bird. After adult left she saw kid come out and fly over to Maz.

I could not go down till 5pm Monday but stayed till after 10pm. At first I saw no one but then saw Radssson on back of Med science building . She then flew over to lower ledge of Ed building. As I ran to follow her, I saw a falcon circle over me, I have some picutres and it landed on back aerial of Ed building. It was an adult male. there was not sound from either. After about 45 minutes the adult male flew off north and Radisson flew off west, shortly after. I ran to follow her and eventually saw her on the south facing moon of Suite Hotel. She then flew west and I ran , and then saw a falocn on Aerial on clinical and i believe it was Radisson. Then she flew over me toward Windsor apartments and I saw a falocn quickly land on back roof of windsor apartments and Radisson flew over . I believe the other flew off also. I am not sure if it was a kid or not. I ran down off parkade and saw one tucked in on dads ledge . I went around to other side and no one tucked in there. Whether this was Radisson , or kid or male, I do not know. It was now pretty dark and as I went up to parkdade to car, I heard a few chups and there was Radisson on her aerial on Windsor apartments. First time she has been there since dad left.

Too dark to go and see if someone still on ledge(Pete was at home with some guy trimming our trees).

We had to go out of town til yesterday but I had Jean keeping an eye for me and I was in phone contact with Gord. Elaine went down one night and saw nothing.

Jean saw one falcon in box and one above box( I do have photos) on Wed , august31 . then she saw one Friday on clinical and she saw 2 around area yesterday. I got an e-mail from someone saying they saw 3 around Ed building on Friday. Who they were I do not know.
Peter and I are leaving shortly to see what we can see

This is the thing

new male chasing kids off: Gord figures they will be sneaking back in. Our kids never leave till mid-Sept. I pray they are O.K. Gord will be releasing our male sometime this week, but not here. We talked on phone, and we do not want to see him in a battle. He would not survive , so soon after injuries. so he will release him the marshlands of southern Alberta. Lots of food there and we are hoping he does not try and come back this year.
we hope he stays there till he migrates . Gord will change his band and put a color tape on his other band for Id . I will start closely monitoring to see if he comes back to area. I pray not. I leave for holidays on Sept 16th so we willknow by then if he comes back.

this had been a hard last few weeks and a long season.

If he does not come back this season, we will hope he has a safe migration and then next season is any ones guess. I am drained, none the less

Oh geez, Bev--if its not one thing its another.... I will keep my fingers crossed that dad won't come back here this year & that he fully recovers from his injuries. These birds are going to drive us to drink! :gaaaaah:

Clinical

Peter and I were there for 4 hours this afternoon and early evening and went back jsut before dark and we honestly do not know what we are seeing. I am just so disheartened and am just going to pray that all is well with the kids. We went walking right through campus and saw no kids.

With the light today our picutres of the 2 falcons we saw around nest box area are not telling us anything. I am hoping one is Radisson. the other adult must be young because when it does make any noise it calls like a kid. Really strange.
I will be keeping my cam up till I leave and hopefully get something. Would be nice to have camera number 2.

But I honestly cannot spend too much more time as I am so fr behind at home. Like about 4 months.

WEber

HI-light of my week, that is for sure.

all 3 kids and 2 adults. I am so far behind with picutres and will not promise but I will try and post a few in next few days. I keep promising but I think you know I am trying. We even watched one almost get a pigeon.

I forgot to mention , that while I was away on family matters, in southern Alberta, last week, I got a call from the ambulance people right next to Weber. Now it was 11:30pm at night and I was very groggy , but they said they thought they had a falcon down . My heart just skipped a few beats and I tried Gord , but he was probably sleeping also. what to do.
so I phoned Elaine ,and waking her up, she said she would go down and see what they had. they said it hit their building and was just standing there. God Bless Elaine. She phoned me when she got there and it was not a falocn, but not a raptor either, so she took it home and then in the morning she took it to the raptor rehab. Well, it turned out to be a Grebe and it would have died if she had not gotten it. It is a water bird and could not go anywhere. It was not hurt and they checked it over and since they are by a marsh, they told Elaine to release it. She did and it was just fine. Elaine said how it made her day to see it back where it should be. We do not like to see anything hurt.
what we think happened is that a falcon, they do hunt at night, chased it and it flew into the building . Our falcons at Weber do hunt them.
So thank-you Elaine for doing this. :loveshow: :loveshow: :loveshow: I was far away and was panicked, when I got the call.

I look about 10 times a day but never see anyone on the cam I sure hope it was dad and he was just sounding young

Dear sweet Elaine :thumbup
You are an ANGEL for sure I'm so glad the Grebe was alright and that you got to be the one to let it free

Also a great big THANK YOU to the wonderful people at the ambulance department for calling and letting you know what happened (not only so they help humans they help the birds) :hapdance:

an adult is on box now and so my only hope is to keep watching cam when I can to make sure we still have Radisson.

unfortunately KF, dad has not been released yet. well fortunately also. It may be tomorrow but I am hoping later.
If he decides to come back home it will take about 2 days to get here.
If you have cams on, you will a falocn or 2 here quite often. Early in the season for here but....
