VWG Gemert

This morning S2 underwent surgery, performed by Caroline Hommers and Dirk Riemersma (he is an expert on orthopedic surgery).
The fixating pins were removed from her wing and the broken bones are healing well. Most of all the fact that the bone parts are in the right positions is very encouraging and gives us hope that she will recover completely and can be released back to the wild, near Gemert (De Mortel).
Later this weekend, maybe even tonight, more information and images will be posted on this site.
Right now we will take her back to the bird-shelter where she can recover from the surgery.

This update on S2 is absolutely the best news of the weekend! Well done, S2 and her veterinarians! The most important part of the the update is the phrase "the correct position of the bones gives us hope"; correct alignment of the bones gives S2 the best possible chance of being able to fly as strongly as she did before she was injured.

Report: Removing fixation peregrine S2

Gemert, Saturday, October 1, 2011

Exactly eight weeks after the peregrine S2 veterinarians Hommers Caroline and Dirk Riemersma the fracture in her right wing had surgery, she once again today by veterinarians treated. The double break in the forearm seems to be recovering well, the fixation is removed and the falcon's wing may be the next time gradual load.

The treatment started making some X-rays. According to that was clearly visible that the two vets bothelften had grown firmly together and decided to remove the fixation.

Before that first sedated and S2, the remains of the film and its relation with forceps removed to the extent that the falcon itself in recent weeks had already done. It became clear that the swelling was present 8 weeks ago about the breach in the wing now almost completely disappeared. Thus there was on both sides of the space between wing and the resin which the pins were fixed. That was easy because that was Dirk the rod below the resin out, the cut and the fixation pins are removed.

Subsequently, the remains of the pins remaining with the wing on one side were disinfected with iodine. That these tips to prevent an infection could cause if they would be pulled through the wing. Then the pins on the other side pulled out with pliers. Some pins were tight, a good sign that it has been fixed. Finally, the wounds still smeared with ointment, some radiographs were made and was within half hour S2 back in the transport crate before they were well out from the anesthesia came and realized what had happened.

The X-rays according to Dirk and Caroline that the bone pieces back together properly fused. In particular, the ulna is from a different viewing directions in a beautiful line. The small "triangle" is a little higher but will over time further modeling to its original shape. The two halves of the radius are also back fused. This is from a viewing direction, but also well in line "skip" something seen from another viewing direction.

What this now means we'll just have to wait. First, the falcon again to get used to the fact that fixation was removed and now her wing for the first time in a normal position to hold. It is very important that they will join us. That she fully symmetrical wing back with the other wing will carry with shoulder and wing tips back exactly the same height. Even a few weeks she will need to close holes in the bone to grow wings before she can go back more tax. When the time comes she can move to a larger aviary and what she can build muscle strength and endurance and show whether they can fly again. Should all go well, that following training, then back to full fitness come.

In short, there are still steps to be put. And although all have a chance of negative outcome may have at this time, we remain optimistic. There is again a slightly greater chance that S2 can return to the wild.

Later this weekend, there will be a movie be placed in removal of the fixation including photographs in the album.

I think this is the most positive report given so far. Keeping talons crossed that S2's recovery continues so well!

Thank you, Anca, for that report. My guess is that S2 will be in rehabilitation over the winter. I can't remember if Pa migrates or not . . . ?
