Amy Kearns of the DNR sent this email to Laura: KathyQ may be a great mom, but she's no housekeeper!!!
"Here's a list of 21 prey species I've identified from the remains we cleaned out of the Market Tower box at chick banding time this spring:

Least Bittern (bill)
Green Heron (bill)
Sora (5 legs)
American Woodcock
Rock Pigeon
Mourning Dove
Black-billed Cuckoo
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Common Nighthawk
Chimney Swift
Northern Flicker
Blue Jay
American Robin
Cedar Waxwing
European Starling
Yellow Warbler
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Northern Cardinal
Red-winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
Baltimore Oriole

I'm still working on identifying all the remains from a few more boxes, but so far Market Tower has the most diversity out of all the boxes (but also MT had the largest quantity of remains, so this is not too surprising).

Interesting list . . . KathyQ doesn't have time to be a great housekeeper. She was much too busy giving the very best of care to little Phoenix, earning the well-deserved title of Mother of the Year (and, with Kinney, Parents of the Year).

The one on its belly this morning made me think -- Phoenix? But, the feathers look too grey. Interesting position for an adult, although I've seen adults lie flat with wings outstretched to sun themselves. Nice bonding shots, too. Thanks, Arles! :dancegirl:

Indiana juvie found in Ohio

On July 23, 2011, a juvie peregrine was found injured in a farmer's field in Wellington, Ohio, a small town about 35-40 miles southwest of Cleveland. It was dark, and raining heavily, so it was lucky that the little juvie was found. He/she had a gash across his back, possibly from a confrontation with another raptor, but no other injuries. He was taken to the Medina Raptor Center for care.

The juvie was banded black/red 00/V, but no-one was able to identify the band number. Laura Jordan at the Medina Raptor Center was hoping to be able to identify the juvie, in order to choose a suitable release site. With a lot of help from Raptor Resource and The Raptor Center, I was able to obtain the bird's identity.

She was banded by John Castrale on May 23 of this year at the Duke Power Plant nest in New Albany, Indiana. Her name is Sacajawea, and her USFWS band number is 1907-02834.

Sacajawea is doing well, and should be ready for release soon.
