Well this is really sad news but good as far as the Falcons go I think anyway
I found over at RRP the box at BlackDog will be pulled out here is what she wrote

I was very disappointed to learn from the 2009 Banding Report that the spikes installed on the stack didn't prevent the problem here and that the box will be pulled. Thanks to Bob and Xcel for their efforts. I will really miss this site, but better not to lose any more falcons.

That's how I feel. I love this site, and really wish we didn't have to pull the box. But we don't have a choice.

Hey, if Diane or anybody gets down toward the site in the evening, could you stop and watch the top of the gas stack (it is the twisty-looking white one)? Bob's current theory is that falcons are chasing swifts or other birds that can dive into the stack. I hope to get down there next week, but if anyone is down there and sees anything, please post it!

Thanks!

Amy

Kittenface, thank you so much for posting the location of this year's banding report. I love to read those!

There were some notable things in there: (1) they referred to the male at one of the nests being Gunner, who didn't show up last year, but was back this year. Makes me think that maybe hope is not lost for some of the other males who didn't show up this year, like Kaver & Carlos; (2) they had a detailed explanation for their treatment of the Great River chicks, even had a link with a picture of Frounce; (3) they are still convinced that 30/B is the female at Sherco; and (4) the Valmont owl nest failed this year because of very aggressive ravens.

I'm going to post this in the "News" topic, too, cause it covers various nests & birds.

Thanks so much for posting the link, kitten. I love reading their reports . . . they're alway so thorough, well written, and well illustrated with beautiful pictures.

But most of all, I especially love their caring and respectful attitude toward all the falcons, owls, kestrels, etc., they watch over and encourage to nest.

    - When they find a bird that's injured or sick, they make sure it gets help.

    - When they discovered a problem at the Black Dog site with falcons getting trapped in one of the stacks, they installed spikes on the stack to try to keep the falcons out. When they found that falcons were still getting trapped, they decided to remove the Black Dog nest box to prevent such occurrences in the future.

While I'll certainly miss seeing the Black Dog falcons, especially in winter, I'm all for the proactive approach of those at the Raptor Resource.

I guess that I just don't understand that Blackdog setup. Seems like they could just put a screen over it, like on a porch. No?

But the report is really nice. They do a good job.

That's a shame, Kittenface! Please keep us updated if you get any more info. I wonder if the death & injury have anything to do with the smokestacks. :(
