I think that it's in Maryland. I clicked on it off the 'little birdie' site under 'black vulture'

:eggclap: OUR MRS HERON LAID A 5th EGG!! It is not so common, 4 is the "norm", but by golly, she DID IT!

I could not get a decent picture as it was too dark, but will try tomorrow. Also, there was mention on their blog that there was an owl attack last night? I dont know if it tried to attack Mrs Heron, or if it just fly by looking interested. Someone mentioned seeing a video, but they only had older videos posted. Will have to ask tomorrow for a link from a viewer. Hopefully there will be no visitors to the nest tonight.

LeeLeeNice - Nice news of the Blue Herons with their 5th egg!

Unfortunately, there was a visitor last night: A Great Horned Owl attacked the female Blue Heron in the nest. Here's a link to the video:

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the female came through the attack without any noticeable injury.

A Bird Cam streaming live video of a black vulture nest is available at http://chimneyswifts.net/tristate/.

The picture below, courtesy of Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research Inc., was taken the day after hatching.

Image

Nest History:
This is the third season a black vulture pair has used a nest site monitored by Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research (http://www.tristatebird.org/). The first year, 2010, there was only one chick and it was possible to successfully place a similarly aged but unrelated, orphaned black vulture chick in the nest. Last year, the adults had two chicks of their own, both of which successfully fledged. The first egg was laid 3/7/11 and the first egg hatched 4/15/11, 39 days later.

This year two eggs were laid, 2/20/12 and 2/23/12. They hatched about 40 days later, between 3/31/1 and 4/2/12, with thirty-two hours elapsing from the first visible hole in an egg until the first chick was free of the shell. The second chick was out of the shell about eleven hours later.

Activity at the nest is being recorded 24/7 for research purposes. This appears to be the only American black vulture pair (Coragyps atratus) whose nest has been streamed live over the Internet. Suggestions for conducting this research and information regarding related research projects/publications would be welcome as comments at the website or as emails to vultureresearch@aol.com.

An American robin lays her eggs in a hanging basket.

The home owners set up a camera to film the results

Jazzel - Thanks for the great news about the hatches at the Blue Heron nest. (Of course, every time I've tried to see the chicks they've been hidden under mom or dad. I'll just have to keep trying.)

I recorded two videos of the Great Blue Heron Nest at Cornell, one on April 29 and one today. I'm posting both of them here:

Puffin Cam...

http://www.shetland.org/puffincam/index ... le=stream2

Sumburgh Head RSPB Reserve:
Sumburgh Head is located at the southern tip of the Shetland Mainland in northern Scotland.

Puffins mate for life, and return to the same burrow every year. Laying only one egg, both parents take turns incubating it for around 40 days. Once the egg hatches, the adults are kept busy finding fish, particularly sandeels, to feed their hungry chick until it is ready to leave the burrow under the cover of darkness and fend for itself.

Egg and mom-egg was laid Friday 5/4

I think Dad is in the nest and Mom delivers dinner. The youngsters are very hungry! Look carefully to see number 5, the smallest.
