Today I attended my first-ever falcon banding event. There is nothing like hearing the juvies in person when the DNR folks first walk in with them. Out comes the first one which was determined to be a male. The two bands go on rather quickly, then Mr. Castrale drew blood and dusted for feather mites.

Next came the second one which is either a big male or small female, so it was banded female. She was a little quieter than her brother.

Sesenta - male - 36/R - Black/Red on left leg - purple FWS band on right leg
Kinsey - female - 70/X - Black/Red on left leg - purple FWS band on right leg

Mr. Castrale stated that the purple FWS band denotes a Midwest wild hatched bird.
