I have been advised that the Power Plant (Wheatfield) nesting box has four eggs with three hatching. This information was sent to me on 4/25/2012. The web site that has been used by NIPSCO is still not responding but is being updated as we speek.
Information about the Midwest peregrines (including a searchable database) can be found at
http://www.midwestperegrine.org/ The following information came directly from John Castrole of the IDNR..
Wheatfield, NIPSCO Schahfer Plant – 1998-2011; 37 chicks fledged (2.6/year)
female – Latesha (b/g Z/K)?? - 11th year, wild-produced in Genoa, WI, 1999
male – b/g??
The falcon cam view on 3/23 revealed a female incubating eggs in the nest box. Three eggs were noted on 3/27.

John S. Castrale, Nongame Bird Biologist, Indiana Division of Fish and Wild reported in an e-mail the following information. The e-mail (to Tony DiPaolo) who retired from NIPSCO, Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield, IN..in 2007
The following information is from John's report as of May 1, 2012
Hatching has occurred at 6 of 16 sites with eggs laid. One attempt has failed. Two other sites have adults present but nesting has not been documented.

The 2012 nesting season is shaping up to set some Indiana records. Sixteen nesting attempts have been observed so far, three more than in any previous year and four more than last year. One new nest site was discovered this year at the Indianapolis Power and Light plant along the White River near Petersburg. A nest box has been present there since 2004. Although 3-4 eggs are generally laid by peregrines, clutches of 5 eggs were noted at three sites this year. About half of the adults have been identified so far. Two are unbanded. Kinney (19 years old) has once again returned to Indianapolis, and with a successful nesting attempt, would give him a mind-boggling 60+ chicks raised in his lifetime. Only one other midwestern peregrine has bred at 19 years of age and the longevity record (according to the Bird Banding Lab) for a peregrine is 19 years, 6 months. Another old-timer was Freedom (18 years old), a released female from Evansville, who has been nesting in Fort Wayne since 1996, but quit laying eggs after 2007. However, after being identified in mid-March, she has disappeared and seems to have been replaced by a juvenile from Canton, OH. A new two-year-old male from Port Sheldon, MI, is also present at that site. A few other veterans include KathyQ (14 years old), Crystal and the amazing one-legged Zephyr (both 13 years old), and Nancy (10 years old), who is paired with her younger brother, Hughes. Their even younger half-sister, Jo-an, is also nesting along Lake Michigan. These three birds were produced at a power plant near Waukegan, IL, north of Chicago. I appreciate any observations or corrections to any of the site accounts.

2011 nesting season summary: nesting attempts were noted at 12 sites, all but one were successful, and 28 chicks (plus an adult) were banded at 11 sites, the only time in recent years where all known nestlings were banded. Peregrines were present at five other locations, but nesting was not observed. Other highlights were the return of Kinney (adding to his record number of progeny raised), 2 pairs with 5 eggs each, a new nest at the Gallagher Power Plant in New Albany, a pair of Indianapolis birds that are nesting in Ohio, and a new falcon cam (at the IPL Harding Street site). Also notable is the return of Zephyr to South Bend, but missing his right foot! Not only did he survive through the nesting season, he helped raise two chicks.

Information about the Midwest peregrines (including a searchable database) can be found at http://www.midwestperegrine.org/

Wheatfield, NIPSCO Schahfer Plant – 1998-2011; 37 chicks fledged (2.6/year)

I am trying to get my schedule moved as to make the banding. Either way I will get some shots from the
enviromental supervisor or the administrator supervisor, John S. Castrale, Nongame Bird Biologist, Indiana Division of Fish and Wildlife. I was hoping that the falcon cam would be resolved by this time. The camera is funtional but does not have a link to the NIPSCO/NISOURCE home page. I am also sure that John will begin his banding for the many sites that he is responsible for and then issue an update to those areas.

On Thursday, May 17, 2012 the IDNR arrived at the plant to begin the process of banding falcon chicks.
This year three chicks (two females and one male) we taken down the outside elevator to the table.
Latesha an adult female, is in her 11th year raising young at the plant.
The chicks were banded, each received a visual health check and a blood sample was drawn for tracking their genetic history. In placing a band on each chick it will have a unique color and series of numbers and letters used to identify the bird. In the end of the day all three chicks were returned to their nest under the observation of Latesha’s watchful eye. We should expect to see them taking their first flight within the next two weeks. Hats off to the IDNR and the power plant personnel who helped in making this happen. Tony

In the Board Index - Peregrine Falcon (USA) - Indiana you list several sites specific to Indiana but do not list the NIPSCO sites, Schahfer, Mich City, BGS, or DHM sites. I have received a few e-mails asking how can they find the sites in an easy manner.

Could you please edit to indicate this areas as well. If you need aditional information please advise.

The following report was sent from
John S. Castrale
Nongame Bird Biologist
Indiana Division of Fish and Wildlife
562 DNR Road
Mitchell, IN 47446

Indiana Peregrine Falcon Nesting 2012 – 06/4/12
Hatching has occurred at 14 of 18 sites with eggs laid and 37 chicks were banded at 12 locations. Two chicks could not be banded at a US Steel location due to safety reasons and hatching just occurred at another site. Two attempts have failed. Three other sites have adults present but nesting has not been documented.

The 2012 nesting season is shaping up to set some Indiana records. Eighteen nesting attempts have been observed so far, five more than in any previous year and six more than last year. One new nest site was discovered this year at the Indianapolis Power and Light plant along the White River near Petersburg. A nest box has been present there since 2004. Although 3-4 eggs are generally laid by peregrines, clutches of 5 eggs were noted at three sites this year with 5 chicks surviving in one case. About half of the adults have been identified so far. Two are unbanded. Kinney (19 years old) has once again returned to Indianapolis, and with a successful nesting attempt, would give him a mind-boggling 60+ chicks raised in his lifetime.

Indiana Peregrine Falcon Nesting 2012 – 07/31/12 (final?)

The 2012 breeding season is at a close and it was a record breaking year with many highs and a few lows. Twenty peregrine territories were known in the state and 18 pairs were documented laying eggs. Fourteen were successful in raising at least one chick for a total of 38 surviving to fledge. All but two chicks were banded in the state. Fourteen unhatched eggs were collected. For a comparison to previous years, I have put together the following table.

Four nest sites were new this year; two along the Lake Michigan shoreline and two (Petersburg, Lawrenceburg) in the southern part of the state. The latter two sites are at power plants where nest boxes have been present for several years. Four pairs laid five eggs and one pair was able to hatch and raise all five. Of the 38 chicks banded, two died before taking their first flight. At this time, no deaths of fledglings have been reported.
Of the 41 adults noted in the 20 territories, seven were unbanded, 25 were identified by their leg bands, and nine were not observed well enough to identify. Identified adults had origins in eight different states: Kentucky (5), Illinois (5), Indiana (4), Wisconsin (3), Missouri (3), Ohio (1), Michigan (1), and Iowa (1). Two of the banded adults had been captured and first banded at their Indiana breeding sites in a previous year. One pair consists of full siblings from Waukegan, Illinois. Only five hacked adults were present this year and by the end of the season, only two remained. Nineteen year-old Kinney, the oldest peregrine in the Midwest, returned and raised two chicks (a record of 61 over his lifetime), before being found dead in mid-July on a ledge of the Market Tower building where he nested. The amazing Zephyr (13 years old) who turned up in South Bend during 2011 missing a foot, returned and helped raise a single chick before he died in a collision with a light pole in late June. Freedom (hacked in Evansville), our oldest female at 18 years, nested in Fort Wayne until 2007, but hasn’t laid eggs since that time. She disappeared by late March and was replaced by a juvenile from Canton, Ohio, who is paired with a new male from Michigan.
Nest sites can be categorized several ways. Of the 20 nest sites, five are in downtown urban areas (four on office buildings, one on a bridge) and the remainder are in industrial areas: power plants (7), steel mills (6), an oil refinery (1), and a lime plant (1). All but three nests were associated with a falcon nest box. Fourteen nests were on buildings, five on smokestacks, and one under a bridge. The Cline Avenue bridge site in East Chicago was demolished this summer. It was the first used in 1989 and 56 chicks were raised here, although no birds have been present since 2009.
Nesting results are presented in tabular form below and site accounts follow. I appreciate the many folks who helped monitor or allowed access to falcon nests in the state.
