Blue 44 is Safely in Bordeaux!
Posted on September 15, 2012 by rangeremma
A quick update this morning on our intrepid young osprey Blue 44 who is on his first southwards migration carrying a satellite tracking device.
His last known position on the 12th of September was in France, having made the first big sea crossing of his journey. By nightfall he had traveled all the way from the Isle of Sheppy in Kent to near Rouen, where he roosted in trees along a roadside in farmland.
The next morning ( Thursday 13th) he flew from Rouen to the Poitou region, stopping for the night near a small village called Chives, roosting in plantation trees amongst rich agricultural land.
Yesterday ( Friday) he traveled south to the Bordeaux region and roosted last night near the town of Hosten and ventured down to the lakes of Hosten, presumably to fish.

Migration Update on Blue YD
Posted on September 14, 2012 by rangeremma
Our second satellite tracked young osprey, Blue YD, from Angus, has now overtaken Blue 44 on the southward migration route. After leaving Cumbria on the 12th, he seems to have taken a very direct southwards route over the UK (though there are some gaps in the data at this point).
Amazingly he crossed over to Brittany in 24 hours and after presumably roosting overnight, he has boldly headed out over the Bay of Biscay yesterday morning. This is a very wide point to cross and a very dangerous part of the migration journey. We can only hope the winds are in his favour and he doesn’t succumb to exhaustion on this long sea crossing.
