I saw one of them today, not sure which. I tried to take a picture with my phone, but she was too far away. That's the first time I've seen one in a while :sum10:

Ok, this is my first sighting in quite some time, not to say for sure that no falcons were in downtown South Bend but after a couple of weeks not seeing them, I quit going down town to check. (Last Friday I thought I saw a blob on the box, but it vanished before I could get my binoculars up.) Then last night (Sept 11) I was headed to the movies when I saw a bird perched on the nest box, so I had to check it out. I quickly pulled around and parked, grabbed my binoculars and there it was, a beautiful brown PEREGRINE FALCON ! She (?) was sitting on the nest box rail, and appeared to be quite relaxed. I decided to walk closer for a better view, and as I lowered my binoculars, I saw, could it be ...... could that be ........ another falcon on the County-City Building? Certainly a bird of some kind, and what kind of bird would a pefa tolerate? I whip my binocs up, and sure enough, the other bird finally turns its head and I see the black stripe, it is another pefa.

I was able to see and enjoy these wonderful birds for the next 15-20 minutes.

The first falcon starts preening and doesn't seem to pay any attention to the other one who is perched about 40-50 feet away. Both these guys had their backs to me most of the time, so I couldn't really make out who they were. ( My theories below)
The first one appeared to be some kind of light brown, but that may have been due to the light. (S)he spent most of the time sitting, then preening, then sitting again. The feathers looked kind of um, well, a bit shabby, maybe this bird is molting? I saw a bit of white on the face, but the bird never turned enough to let me see the chest, so I don't know if this was a juvie or not. The second bird had its back to me the entire time, colored a charcoal black. It sat quietly, serenely, also seeming not to notice the other bird. I dropped my gaze for a minute, lost in other thoughts, and when I lifted my eyes both birds had vanished, as if they had taken fight just one moment apart from one another. Apparently, they had been in tune all along.

So who are these birds?

Possibility A: Zoe on the nest box, Guinevere towards the building edge.
Possibility B: Guinevere on the nest box, a new bird towards the building edge. Possibility C: Two new birds.
I will try to watch again and find out more. Maybe you guys can tell me some things to watch out for and together we can find out who these birds are, ( or at least a better guess.)

now returning to my duties as the

Great report, sbwatcher!!! I would like to think that you saw Zoe and Ms G!!! Or maybe Ms G. and a subadult male?

I do hope that Guinevere holds this territory!!!

Thanks so much!!! I hope this means that your sightings will greatly increase!!! (sure wish the cam was still on!!)

Wow, I am touched by your interest in our local feather-bearing friends !
When I saw them it seemed to me that the darker bird towards the edge of the building was a full adult. Then again, I don't know the difference between a sub-adult and a juvie, or a sub-adult and a full-grown falcon. If I have time, I will try and catch them tonight.

No falcons tonight. Checked at 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. It was raining, and they probably just didn't want to sit out in the rain. Will try to check tomorrow. I hope no one here will worry about them catching cold in the rain !

Wow , five thousand page views, thanks guys ! (My secret goal has been reached! :thumbup ) And gigi, thanks for the award, my heart has been warmed, but don't forget to include marineof2. I don't know him, but I'm sure that if he lived as close to these falcons as I do, then he'd be watching and posting quite frequently. Plus, every sighting is special , and marine of 2, I have appreciated your posts also.

I may not be back on-line until Wednesday, but I'm sure the falcons will keep.

BTW, when is owl season? I am trying to convince my cat of the joys of on-line bird watching. Do you guys think that if I bought him some owl footy pajamas that he might develop an interest?

sbwatcher , temporary cat neglecter

If you can get your cat to wear footy jammies you had better take a lot of pictures for us :hahah

I haven't seen this before, so if I am duplicating someone's earlier post, I apologize.

I looked into the webcam and the page states it is offline for the season. Hopefully it will go back up early next year so we will have time to see a new male bonding with Guinevere...

I saw a falcon flying yesterday in Mishawaka...unfortunately, I always seem to see them while driving, so I can't get a picture.
