Love the video Ruud!

I was with Richard all day. Went to a raptor program at one of the state parks. It was a beautiful day and wonderful program.

Welllllll, I was talking to Richard about this new male and he is not so sure it is a male at all. That would explain why KathyQ has not invited this bird into the box.
I guess we will just have to wait and see. :smile:

As for me, I am holding out in my belief that this is a male courting our KathyQ.

maybe not even a male? I guess that is possible, but I just can't see Kathy allowing another female that close to the nest box. .EVER. .

Keep this info in mind...If "he" was from a open ledge nest...he may be reluctant to go inside a nest with a bigger bird than him....

A bit of Info below, from MPFRP site, under Natural History section...

Effect of fledge site on use of nest site - Adults tend to use nest sites similar to the site they fledged from (building, smokestack, bridge, or cliff), but this preference is far from absolute. Males are more likely than females to use nest sites like their fledge sites. Of 164 females, 101 (59%) used a nest site like the site they fledged from. Of 137 males, 100 (73%) used a nest site like their fledge site.

*****and off topic for this thread, but I often wonder if this is why Durand (Columbus) insists on having her scrape and eggs out near the edge of the nestbox...She was hatched in a scrape that was open to the sky and a small area to go back under while she was a chick...****

I hope you are right. Richard has been volunteering with the DNR since the early 90s and he is very cautious about making any kind of an ID without bands. He thinks this bird is similar in size to KQ. Time will tell.

There is no way that Kathy Q would allow another female this close to her nest . She would have chased it off. And others have seen them fly together and she would not fly with another female.

This could be a big male. The young male at our site is very big compared to other males we have had and if Radisson is not around we often mistake him for her. (because of his size)
Just my take on it. Lots of time for him to make a nest5 box appearance, if he is going to stay around.
