Forgot what I had posted. :girlcrazy: I just couldn't resist being silly!
I regularly use google translate - mainly for the Dutch, German and Italian posts. I am sure my "translations" leave a lot to be desired, but it is the best I can do!

Well I don't like the sounds of this at all the chicks all looked good in bevs videos yesterday

Eagleholic posted:
Concern at the Sooner Lake nest – have we lost the third chick?

March 27, 2013 — bald eagle, birds, Eagle, eaglecam, eagleholic, hatchling, nature, raptors, Sooner Lake, Sutton Center

It appears there was much concern at Sooner today. No one has seen the third chick for sure for a while, and it sounds like there was even concern for the second one, as it wasn’t seen moving very much. I just watched a feeding and there are clearly two active chicks. I also did not see a third moving chick, and number one was bonking the heck out of number two even when his crop was so full he could hardly move. But we’ve seen this before, and hopefully number two will get some food, there is plenty on the nest. Time will tell. It does appear to me that perhaps we’ve lost number 3 (possibly laying there at about the 2 o’clock position in the pic shown) but will hope for the best and wait for further confirmation from the Sutton Center folks.

==================================================================
Well now Eagleholic isn't sure or not :nailbite:

More on Sooner Lake – video showing all 3 from earlier today

March 27, 2013 — bald eagle, birds, Eagle, eaglecam, eagleholic, hatchling, nature, raptors, Sooner Lake, Sutton Center

A big thanks to Mary for sharing this video showing all 3 chicks up and active! Hopefully its just that we didn’t see the little one later in the day when I was watching! Fingers crossed!

Today's report from Sooner Lake- 2 chicks confirmed dead calendar updated....

"28 March 2013: The nest is down to two chicks. As feared, the youngest chick appears to have not survived very long after hatching. Another of its siblings has also perished. We did not see and cannot say definitively how or why they died, although it is most likely due to either competition for warmth or aggressive competition among the siblings. During a feeding bout prior to 9:00 am this morning, the size difference between the oldest chick and its nestmate was readily apparent, and when the adult eagle briefly stopped feeding the chicks while it took a moment to work on dismantling a fish, the oldest chick could be seen using the pause to hammer on its smaller sibling. While the chicks are being brooded and while they are actively receiving food during a feeding session, this aggressive behavior is inhibited, but it can surface when the chicks are uncovered and not being continually fed. For a more in depth discussion of this behavior, visit the link at the upper left side of this page for the 2012 Nesting Season Information and read the March 2, 2012 entry. Two eggs is an average clutch size for Bald Eagles, and three or four egg clutches mean the chicks face longer odds for survival."

all I can say, is that nature knows best and we all will feel more comfortable with 2 in this nest bowl sad as it is.

Start of a feed

Image

Older chick is really bopping the younger chick, so the younger chick has learned to go limp...same thing happened at Richmond last year...its a good trick..bopping stops once the eaglet goes limp...and hopefully, the feed lasts long enough that the older chick falls into a food coma and then the younger one eats..thankfully, the close up cam froze so I didn't have to watch the bopping...

Both little heads up before the bopping started..

i watched for a bit today after I heard the news of #3. Two days ago #3 was fine. I saw a feeding and they were ALL full. I don't understand how it could have died so fast.

#1 is VERY aggressive. Even when it's crop is huge it still tries to keep the other one from eating. Hopefully now that there's only 2 of them #1 will calm down a little bit. I sure hope so.

don't hold your breath about the bully calming down..R1 was so mean to R2 at Richmond last year, she pecked a bald spot on his little head and back...but, he was strong..and he figured out how to handle it and turned out fine AND they turned into best buddies....but, boy it was tough to watch.

I am so glad that falcons don't do this..

Your so right SGB I never really thought of it til you said it. out of all the raptors I watch they are the only ones that don't fight to hurt maybe for a spot under parents but not a painful fight I wonder if it is because food is more readily available

Food does have something to do with it...but, even with nests full of food, you will still see bullying. Osprey and Hawks are just as bad!!! makes me crazy..

I did check in on the kids today...I only watched for a few. When I first opened the cam, no parent in view...then Dad (?) Arrived. I thought he was gonna do a feed, but nope..crops didn't look full to me..hopefully there was a feed after I left..

They were getting a good feeding here (about 10 min) after your pictures SGB and they both got feed no bullying but then the little one waited til big one was fulled up then it got good feed I just hate that they are getting so close already to the edge, this picture doesn't show it but I almost had a dam heart attack that little one got right there and then mom pushed it back

Being so aggressive might get #1 in trouble with the condition of that nest. I don't want to see either one of them lost.

I really wish ... since this is a man-made nest to begin with ... that they would replace it with something bigger and more secure. Maybe they should contact Jim Ray at Lake of the Ozarks for instructions on how to build a sturdy Eagle nest!!!!! :gaaaaah:

My thoughts exactly. But then I guess they did not expect tree to blow down. maybe we could suggest it for next year.
